Can you still burn CDs? Laptop or desktop burner?
There are so many possible things that could be causing the problem.
- Here's a link to the firmware: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=775 Check that you are up to date and if not, flash the newer firmware.
- Go back to an earlier restore point when things worked.
- Use Device Manager to uninstall your drive and then restart your system. Also uninstall the IDE channel the drive is on if you have IDE and the burner is not on the same channel as the hard disk drive with the OS.
- See if a different burning program like ImgBurn (free) will recognize media. http://www.imgburn.com
- Use a registry cleaner to clean up the system.
- Run Ad Aware or other similar software to remove spyware and other crapola from your system.
- Disable your virus protection and see if that's causing the problem. Just be sure to not open any email or other files without turning the protection back on and unplug from the net before disabling protection.
- Install your burner in another system to verify it actually still burns.
- Backup your data, reformat your HDD, and reinstall your OS with updates and only those applications you actually use.
- This is an older drive so it's possible it has reached end-life.

Hello twinkie
Did you go through the list of things I suggested you do?
The easiest way to exclude your burner is to actually install it in another system to see if it works. If it does, something is amiss in your system. If it doesn't work, then it is probably faulty and needs replacing.

Let's begin by uninstalling your burner from the system.
- Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
- Click the Hardware tab and then the Device Manager button.
- Click the + symbol beside DVD/CD-ROM drives to expand the category.
- Right click on the name of your burner and select Uninstall.
- Click OK and restart your system.
If that doesn't help, use the guide linked below to check the transfer mode settings on your burner. It should be in DMA mode and not PIO mode.

Here's the link to the free spyware program, Ad_Aware. Download, install, and run.

Here's a link to a free registry cleaner.
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fi...escription.html
Use Nero or whatever authoring program you usually use and instead of trying to burn with it, output an ISO image file instead. Use ImgBurn in Write mode to burn the image file you created. The link to download imgburn follows:

If need be, enlist the help of a relative or friend knowledgeable about computers to help you with the above or to uninstall your current burner and test it in another system.
