First you need a video capture card and software so you can record the program from direct TV to your computer. Then you need a DVD authoring software, TMPGEnc DVD Author is what I use, and the burning tools to copy the output file of TMPGEnc DVD Author to dvd-r.

Acer 800Lci notebook 1.3 Ghz Pentium M, 512Mb DDR ram. Pioneer DVR-106D USB External.

I want to do the same thing. Is the process fairly easy once everything is in place? Does the end result look as good as the digital dish image?

it all depends on the capture settings. make sure you get a capture card which will capture mpeg2, DVD format, and the resultin DVD will look as good as the TV transmission

i did this...
used a dazzle usb mpeg2 capture device and connected to directtv receiving via s-video and video was crisp..

took about 2 hours for movie recording, then 3 more hours of authoring my dvd and processing in dvd complete (dazzle program) and then 20 minutes to burn to dvd+r

image quality nearly same as dish image
