Im cant seem to get my mind straight of what cpu i want. is a pentium d 3.0 way faster than a P4 2.8. What would be the major diffences? could you all come up with examples of Speed Difference? thanks

The pentium D is a duel core processor, meaning that each core runs at 3Ghz. The P4 is a single core. So you could basically say that the pentium D can do twice as much work in half the time.

The Pentium D is better.

Core 2 Duo is way better than the pentium D.

Ray, since when do Pentium D cores run at 6Ghz? lol

They're both worthless CPUs, get a Intel Core 2 Duo E6750.

I'm shocked. I would have thought you'd know better by now.
The Pentium D is ass on a stick compared to any Core 2 Duo, and the cores do not run at double the speed.

i figured it was a type-O and why they didnt is your guess

i have a pentium d 820 and a pentium d 915

these processors are great

the 915 with the 4Mb L2 cache rocks

the Pen D's are not expensive these days so i find them well worth the purchase

some people like to split hairs on processors and/or gotta have the best but for all my needs and budget the D series is fine by me

No pentium D is worth the purchase. Want some thing on a budget? Try this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116052

It's a core 2 duo with less cache.

i like that core 2 duo processor. its just 10 dollars more than the pentium d. how much would i be able to over clock that one with the original cooling? by the way that was a nice find.

Well there is a version that's slower than the E2180 I posted. It runs at 1.8 Ghz instead of 2Ghz. Toms hardware overclocked that to 3.2 ghz on STOCK cooling. Since the one i linked to is faster it might overclock even more.

Do you already have the motherboard?

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro would be a good choice. It can be had for around 23-30 bucks.

No overclocking on that. If you are building a quad core then get this motherboard. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128050

You can use it for the quad core also. It will work very well.

The intel mobo is crap. Forget about overclocking, and since it is open box it probably wont work.

In the same way that a 486DX is great. Yeah sure, it works, but who cares? The Pentium D CPus (especially those ones) are just too slow for serious consideration today. You can get CPUs for naff all money that will rip the pants off any Pentium D, let alone the budget ones.

As for the PSU, go with a Thermaltake Purepower if you want cheap. It doesn't have to put out that much power, so you'll be fine.
Avoid an Intel motherboard if you want to overclock, they're pretty awful.
