Why do my ISOs (which are movies) skip and often stop when playing them on a home DVD Player ?

I am trying to back up my DVDs which are movies I bought. They are new too, such as Shreak 3, Live Free Die Hard and many more. Before I do anything, I stop all running processes, such as firewalls, anti virus, and other running programs. I then use DVDFab to make an ISO image out of my DVDs which also removes the copyright features. The image comes out to be like 4.3 Gb because I remove some content, like second languages, special features and sometimes captions as well. I still leave the root menu though. I then use Power ISO to burn the image on a Verbatim DVD with the lowest write speed which is 4x. Once again, before I do that I stop all running processes. Now here is where the problem starts, I then use Nero 7?s CD-DVD Speed 4.7.0.0 to run a Disc Quality Test on the DVD I have just burned. Now, even though I burn the same movie, the results are always not consistent. Sometimes, my DVD comes out with many errors which stop them from playing correctly on my home DVD player.Other Times, they come out flawlessly and work like a charm. I basically have to throw away 1 or 2 dvds before getting it right! THis sucks and I was wondering if any good soul out there will try and help me..PLEASE!!

Verbatim are usually some of the best discs you can buy.
You may need a firmware update for your burner.
If you're using +R discs, you can try booktyping them to DVD Rom. It makes them more compatible with players.
Good luck!

How long have you had your Sony drive? After a while sometimes a burner just starts to crap out. Is the firmware updated for recent and better write strategies? Also, writing at 4x might not be a great idea. In the past we were always told to burn at the slowest speed but as the power has increased in the lasers of newer DVD burners it is no longer required to burn at the slowest speed. 8X DVDs in a burner such as yours should be burned at 8X in most cases. I too have a Sony drive, mine is actually a model previous to yours, and I would get horrible scans when my 8X or 16X media was burned at the slowest speeds.
Also, try some other burning applications to see if the problem gets fixed. There are a lot of free ones that will burn ISOs such as ImgBurn. Its a great program and a necessity if you ask me.

I already upgraded it to the latest firmware, I bought the computer on January of 2005 which came with the same dvd burner. I used other applications as well, poweriso and nero...i haven't used imgbrn but I will certainly will now to give it a try. The thing is that my burns came out fine a month ago, but now they are not. I think it is the dvd drive itself..i am thinking of purchasing an external drive...any thoughts? Which type of drive do you recommend? thank you for your replies!!!

That drive is almost 3 years old so it might just be time for a new one. A lot of members use external burners and swear by them so thats fine if you were going that route. Personally, I only use internal burners. They are inexpensive and easy to install.
My personal favorite brand is Lite-On, but I hear that Samsung and Pioneer have some of the best these days.
