Hey, I have been a netflix subscriber for a while now. Just read there terms of agreement for the first time.

It states that they have the right to cancel your membership at their discretion if they think your ripping movies.

My question is, Is there any way for them to really know, I mean there are so many people just like me who do not rip their movies, but do rent A lot of movies, I think I watch about 24 movies from them a month. I dont think its right that I could be called a ripper just from renting A lot of movies, They should have a way to actually know should they not?

They won't know (or really care unless you do something DUMB.) It is, however, illegal. They are just covering their a**es...

Short of you telling them that u r ripping their movies or some one spying on u telling them that, there is in reality NO way for them( netflix) to know what u r doing with their movies. As far as they can tell, u r watching them (legally).

Perhaps there's a "Netflix" chip like the infamous "Blockbuster" chip....

I had a friend accidentally put his ripped movie in the netflix sleeve and sent it back to them. He got dropped but no federal pirating charges...yet.
Bilbo65---I remember that thread, classic. You could always use this to keep the special chip from sending its signal

If your ripping Netflix movies then I'd say keep your mouth shut to Netflix!! Better safe than sorry as I doubt you'd want to lose your membership. BTW Netflix has out of print movies (older titles) for rent meaning you'd have to rip the movie if you wanted a copy of it.

I wonder if they still do that movie slowdown stuff meaning if your a high volume renter do they take longer to ship your movies? I haven't had a problem with 16 movies a month. What about the guy renting 24 movies a month?

Copying movies that you don't own is universially considered a form of piracy and is totally illegal. Discussion of engaging in illegal activities should not be condoned by this forum.

the term is called throttling and yes it still happens between the second and third month if you're a heavy user

I think they have more of a tendency to throttle heavy users of fairly new movies and less so for those that rent older titles. Renting 12 to 16 older (not new releases) movies a month & getting them 3 to sometimes 4 days after I ship a movie back means I'm getting throttled a little bit but not enough to upset me as I usually keep my 4 movies a week before sending them back. The shipping facility is here in Houston. Normally (Monday through Saturday) I ship on day 1 & get new movies on day 3. Sometimes it takes an extra day to get them but no longer than that & I've been getting them this way for several years.

I never once ordered a new release from Netflix in the 12 months i was with them and was still throttled. but i turned over more than 20 a month on the 3 at a time plan. that got cut down to no more than 12 once the throttling started

BTW i did fine a way to beat the throttling. What you do is after two months cancel then rejoin about a month later and do the same thing in two months

Thanks a bunch guys for the answers.

Yeah throtteling still occurs, as I dont think that the case is out of court yet. I know i get throttled hard, I used to be able to get around 24 movies in 2 weeks, now it takes me a month to see that many. There almost always shipping movies from weird location for no reason, And I have tested it as well....I would go rent say "Terminator 3" they would say it was gonna take 3 days cause they have to ship it from a location that has it....well Then while I still ahve it, I used my wifes account to order "Terminator 3" again, got it in 1 day....imagine that.

You think the throttling is bad at Netflix, try Blockbuster. Unless you live out in the sticks, there are plenty of distrubution centers to handle prompt delivery. They just don't want to pay out a lot of money for shipping, so they throttle people who are returning 8 movies the very next day after recieving them. How many people watch 8 movies in one day? They certainly know what's going on! Been in business for about 10 years. Throttling controls profit levels, not piracy.

I have to agree with Blockbuster being the worse of the two as I've experienced both first hand. Seems like with Netflix if you (I) got the movies in the mail by Friday/Saturday they would be sending the new titles on Monday/Tuesday, but Blockbusters queue was always screwed up with me and you never really knew what you were going to get or in what order. I was withing a "mailing day" away from distribution centers for both companies so the turn around was usually 2-3 days for me and Netflix was always faster.

During the last two years Blockbuster has been in the process of increasing the amount of their distrubution centers in an attempt to catch up with Netflix who is slowing putting them out of business.

I return my movies on Tuesdays and Fridays. Main office of Netflix is in San Jose, Ca. Blockbuster, is in the S.F bay area, too. Since, I live right here in the middle of Silicone Valley. The mailing turn around time is usually two or three days.

I'm sure most have read this article, but it never made sense to me that a company would, in essence, compete with itself.

See what happens to those corporate management types who get too much college and not enough common sense.
(Net)flix, used this name because they knew the future of main stream sells will one day be downloads. Tivo and Computer. Guess the pirates will have to hack their servers then. LOL
