I am looking to buy a DS Lite and an R4... will a 1GB card be enough for a few games or are there games that are over a gig? What are the biggest games?

i have 2gb and i still havent filled up my card half way. 1gb is enough, unless you plan on using it for music and videos.

game sizes are 32mb, 64mb, to like 126mb. one of those 3 are the usually sizes.

Those are the cart sizes, yes, but if you trim the ROMs you can save some MBs. There is also one game, ASH, that uses a cart with a size of around 200MB.

I currently have 46 commercial ROMs on my 2Gb card, all trimmed.

when you convert videos to the NDS format for watching, does the size drop a lot?
can you fit a few videos as well?

the video quality is terrible to be honest, not even worth it...however the music sounds just fine :)

As for a 1 gig card being enough, it is for most people, as long as you dont expect to have over 20 games on the card. ROM trimming works as well but not really necessary, imo. Also the r4 has some compatibility issues with certain 2 gig cards, something to look into :)

I dont think I would want over 20 games on at a time... rather beat one and then put a diff one on and such lol

Is the video quality really that bad? Some people say its decent.
Should I try converting a video of mine to the DPG format and playing to see the quality?

obviously there is a big difference watching videos on monitor and on the ds, but the video is watchable. i think videos on a ds is only needed as a back up, just in case your thumbs get tired or something and you just want to sit back and watch something on a road trip.

its also a good way to show off too =P besides that, i think video is a waste of space.
