Hello All...

I'm in the process of building a home office PC for the girlfriend. I've got all the components lined up and trying to make a choice between the following processors.

Pentium 4 631 Cedar Mill 3.0Ghz, Intel Pentium 4 640 Prescott 3.2GHz or Intel Dual-Core E2180 Allendale 2.0GHz.

These 3 processors are in my price range.

Any recommendations? Any experience with the above?

Keep in mind this PC will be solely for home office use and no gaming. Maybe the only game being played would be The Sims.

Thanks in advance...

So the low-end Dual-Core would outperform a Prescott 3.2Ghz?

Heat is not a concern...

I'll make it nice and simple. Buy the E2180. There's no question about it, it's a ten times better CPU.

And not just any dual core either, the E2180 is much better than the dual core Pentiums of old.

So the E2180 Allendale should suffice?

Not necessarily. The Pentium Ds were also duel core, but a Core 2 Duo would kick a Pentium Ds ass in any benchmark. Pentium D is older technology. The C2Ds have way better architecture and therefore can out perform a Pentium D any day.

No, dual core is a type of processor, implying it is like having two CPUs in one (barring a few technical differences inside). Core 2 Duo is a model of processor, just one of many such examples.

P.S. Don't go cheap on the CPU Fan! makes all the difference no matter what CPU you choose. And by the way the CPU i prefered blows the other CPUs away by Proformance and Price! Check the specs

A D925? Please tell me you're joking. For $14 more you can buy an E2140. At least 20% faster and uses HALF as much power.

Are you serious? Lets see the Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2140 1.6GHz 800MHz 1MB S775 CPU vs. Intel Pentium D 925 3.0GHz 800MHz 4MB Skt 775 Dual Core CPU....Yea the Core2 Runs cooler but thats the only advantage it has and that can be solved with a good CPU fan which you should have anywayz. So now lets compare 3.0Ghz vs. 1.6Ghz, 1MB vs. 4MB (the Pentium has 2MB per core), both dual core and buth 800Mhz front side bus, Pentium Cost less. What are you gonna choose?

just because the pentium d925 has higher specs than the E2140 c2d doesn't mean it's better. like waymon said, c2d architecture is way better. a better architecture can result in getting the same performance, but using less power and lower specs; less power = less heat. and if you add aftermarket cooling, the c2d will be even cooler than a pentium d with the same setup.

troybunda: I'm going to choose the E2140 because it's faster. Look at some benchmarks, not just the statistics. Pentium Ds suck, and they always have.
There is NO situation where I would ever recommend a Pentium D nowadays, not to anyone. There simply is no reason to buy one.
