hiya folks,
i've owned a an 120gb usb wespern digital passport model....
heres a link.. http://westerndigital.com/en/products/pr...259&language=en
..but as of lately i've been getting lapses in performance so i choosed to open it; and i realise the mini usb jack(plug) was lose, hence no connection was established....but the hard drive (which is really small btw) is intact..I also realised that ths usb wasn't directly connected to the hdd, but to some kind of usb to ide adapter/card, which i could easlily pull off and be left with a "mini" 120gb ide hd.
Now for the problem, as of last night, it's been 3 weeks since i begun my search, but to no avail....
i'd appreciate any help....
ALso, it appears size happens to be a factor here, thus a usb to ide adapter from a different usb hdd most likely won't fit on the hdd or in the case, or maybe both. Thus i may need a card made EXACTLY for this brand/model. i tried contacting Western DIgital customer support, but that features down...guess i'll try later..
Thanks again in advance.

The only suggestion I can think of is to buy another 2.5" IDE to USB drive enclosure, and either keep that, or use the circuit board from it.

makes sense, i take it the boards are all the same(size-wise), i.e. it'll fit in my case,,,then again, if it doesn't , i may just transfer my hdd into this new enclosure.
I appreciate it, btw..

I've not seen two alike If I'm honest, but I'm sure you can figure something out.

hello, ..me again..
my 2.5" enclosure arrived 2 days ago, and i made a startling discovery; the ide jack on the board is too small, thus my hdd wont fit in it..
Is this supposed to happen.??..(well, duh it's not..or else it'd fit..)......what i mean to ask here is; what would be my status now that the hdd is a tad too big for the board????
I even made a side-by-side comparison of my original(broken) WD usb-t0-ide board, versus that which came in the enclosure. And this one was smaller..Thus what does this say aout my hdd size??is it a 2.5" or maybe bigger???
Or maybe i just got unlocky....maybe my hdd would fit in some other 2.5"...
Please check link in previous post for reference on my usb hdd model (western digital Passport)

Thanks in advance.

As far as I can recall there are two types of connector for 2.5" drives, I presume you must have one of each... If the drive was 3.5" you'd know about it, they're not only wider than 2.5" drives, but twice as tall.

see if there is an adapter on the drive that gets connected to the usb interface card. i have 2 different usb enclosures that have been used with different 2.5" hd without having that problem. i have a customer with a 2.5" enclosure & his problem was his drive was to thick in height to fit in. just switched drives for that. unless wd which made my laptop drive makes propriorty drives then there appears to be an adapter or just think it is wrong size but isn't. there are 6 pins that are seperated from the rest that don't get connected.

Well i'd be damned. the usb adapter(in the 2.5" case) was two pinholes short, hence i hastily concluded that my mini hdd wouldn't fit. But what do you know....
i took off the entire board and externally connected it to my hdd, then placed it all in the enclosure and it actually works now...Though it's two pinholes short...
Thank you all so very much...
