write down what all the builtin cards are in device manager especially the manufacturers of those components so can locate the drivers if xp don't load it's own drivers.
Thanks, ddp. Prior to getting the laptop, I downloaded all of the updated drivers from the HP site, for Vista. I saw the XP drivers and couldn't understand why I couldn't format the drive and use XP.

I already got rid of almost all the lite versions of software that was on the laptop and installed full versions.

I will look at putting the XP on the machine, this weekend. It was a Christmas present for my wife. I still have to show her how to use it. :)

Life is good!

the fact that there is no exclamation marks in device manager means that the card is not being detected by windows at all even when drivers are not loaded. it should at least see an unknown device which it isn't.

So it means it is either the card its self or the slot right ?

it is a 50/50 chance on which is the problem. try the card in another laptop to see if even seen & try a card in your slot to see which is causing the problem.
