I just got a Sony DRU-840a DVD-RW. I connected it to the IDE ribbon that my cdrw drive is on. Digital playback is enabled in device manager. When I play a DVD with the Nero bundle that came with my DVDrw drive, there is no sound and Nero displays a message "you need to have DVD-video multichannel plug-in". My comp specs are as follows:
Dell 2.8g XP SP2
512 RAM
CDRW drive
Nvidia fx 5500
Soundblaster audigy HD
Why don't I have sound? Is there a way to play DVD's without using Nero? I have deamon tools, DivX, WMP, Sonic. I am missing something obvious perhaps? This is my first foray into DVD playing and burning over a computer. Any help is appreciated.
(BTW, Nero can kiss my ass, as I have no plans to buy their product, and I think it is outrageous Sony woould sell a DVD drive that requires a second-party software purchases to even work.)

DVD-video multichannel plug-in <--- needs the serial/code installed to use it for a plugin...
but! did you add an audio cable to your drive / motherboard also?
get VLC player or ZOOM player (both free and no need for codecs) AWESOME apps...
Nothing here to see, move along folks.

I have digital playback enabled, so I presume the sound should travel to the soundcard via the IDE cable like it does for my CDRW. My cdrw works fine, it has the IDE cable and power supply cable but no auxillary audio analog cable. My computer supports digital audio, so the Sony DVDRW should not need an auxllary analog audio cable.

I learn quick, but I add that I am a total noob at this.
As a last resort of desparation, I tried playing the DVD movies through Creative Mediasource Player and WMP, but neither recognizes the format. DivX is no help either.
WTH am I doing wrong......I will check out VLC player. Perhaps it will help with troubleshooting.

VLC player works, but it is choppy and laggy with sound and video.
Any ideas?

I ate those last words, bit down on the bullet, and obtained nero 7 premium. It has been very easy to use, much easier than ver7 and ver8 trial packs which were missing all the crucial plug-ins. It allows me to do almost everything I want to all in one package.
