I got a Sony DVDRW with nero 7 essentials. For some reason, Nero will play my DVD's but will not play audio. It claims it needs DVD-Video multichannel plug-in. Huh?
I plan to use my DVD burner to burn DVD's I DL from torrents in AVI form, averaging about 700 mb. I also plan to make edited discs of home movies I have recorded.
(VLC player plays video and audio, but it is choppy, so it looks like I will have to purchase Nero.)

If my Nero essentials has a 30 day trial, shouldn't I at least be able to watch a DVD or burn some things to decide if I like it or not? Which Nero should I purchase, i.e., which is cheapest that will allow me to do the things I have described?

I think the Essentials version lacks some of the plugins necessary for some tasks.

For conversions there is the free program DVD Flick:

For backing up DVDs you own, you can use the free program DVDFab Decrypter to rip to your HDD, the free program DVD Shrink to reauthor and/or compress, and the free program ImgBurn to burn your new disks.

I just obtained Nero 7 premium. It allowed me to do everything I wanted to, all in one program. It was a gamble and a bummer I didn't get a trial plug-in pack to see if I really wanted to buy it, but it has worked out well and is much easier to use than the v8 & v7 trial packs missing all the crucial plug-ins.
