Ok,first off, I just wanted to know what a safe adhesive would be to keep heatsinks on the ram chips on the video card? I saw people using glue in other forums, but I was afraid that it would melt, and that wouldn't be good since my PSU has a open fan in the top, and the card is right over it. I have superglue and regular Elmers, not to sure what else.

^In addition to that, my 3870s came with these stick (sort of) thermal pads that helped hold the vram heatsink on. I took those off and applied them to my swiftech vram heatsinks and they appeared to stick, but then they got loose just sitting upside down. I have my build in my cold cellar, and I was wondering if these are heat activated?

Finally, is it better to go with 2x2GB of ram or 4x1GB of ram? Is there a performance increase? I got the 4x1GB because I didn't think there was a difference, but maybe I am missing something?

Sorry for this long post btw! But thanks for the help in advance!

By far the biggest design flaw of cases like the Antec 900 is the exposed reversed power supply, which could potentially be prone to falling screws and indeed RAMsinks (much though I love my Thermalright GPU cooler, the adhesive for the RAMsinks uis utterly useless and all 8 have fallen off).
You can buy an adhesive version of Arctic Silver V around, I'm not sure of its name.
Heat doesn't seem to affect the adhesive of the sinks, in fact it seems to reduce their effect, not enhance it.
It is far better to go with 2x2GB of RAM than 4x1GB, mainly due to chipset limitations when addressing more than 2 sticks of memory (some chipsets like the P31 can't even use more than 2 at once). Typically memory bandwidth is far lower, and overclocking potential much reduced when using more than 2 sticks. 2GB modules are so cheap these days it seems silly not to use them when going for large amounts of RAM.

Thanks for the reply sam! I already have 4x1GB sticks of partriot ram, so I hope there wont be any problems. I wont be overclocking, if anything I will be increasing the timings to keep up with the over clocked Q6600.

So if I drop a dab of superglue on one of the vrams and add a ramsink, there wont be any trouble doing this right?

There won't be any trouble using superglue, but there won't be any advantages either. Superglue probably doesn't conduct heat very well, so in doing this you render the RAMsink completely pointless. In fact you risk overheating the sinks because you will starve them of any cooling whatsoever. In the 900, I'd avoid using RAMsinks of any kind. Any decent graphics card should be able to run with no RAMsinks at all, mine does.

Why dont you use a product designed for the job such as the Arctic Alumina Adhesive that is shown here?

Never used it myself but it would be where I would start looking.

*** PS THIS IS A PERMANENT ADHESIVE AS IT IS AN EPOXY RESIN ADHESIVE !! *** - so dont try to remove it afterwards or you could remove the IC's from the card!

I plan on over clocking the cards quite a bit. The stock core clock is 777 I believe, and once I flash the BIOS, I plan on going to 900, as I see other people in other forums with the DuOrbs. I am also watercooling the cores, so I think that will help quite a bit.

Phil, I might just buy some of that stuff off of newegg, as I need some extenders for my PSU's cables as well, or I might get the stuff from ebay.

I can overclock my X1900XT's RAM from 725mhz to 873mhz using ATitool. I can't go any higher. I got this result with the stock cooler, using the HR-03's RAMsinks, and using no RAMsinks at all. It didn't make a blind bit of difference. Heat isn't the issue with graphics RAM usually, unless you raise the voltage for it significantly. It's interesting to note that a friend's X1900XT-X, whilst having a more overclockable core, can also only reach 873mhz on the RAM, despite having a higher clock to start with.

Still, the water blocks came with the heatsinks, and I opt to use them. With the flashed BIOS, I bet I could get a few hundred extra mhz out of the ram, and the same with the core.

Just a correction for your signature, your hard drives are 7200rpm, not 7400. :)

Ahh, thank you!

Btw, random, but how many posts do you have sam? Arent you going to be a mod soon?

EDIT: Also, after some searching on the net, I see other people using the "superglue and thermal paste" method, in which they apply arctic ceramique or whatever to the heatsinks, and then leave a small space around the edges and apply the super glue in those spaces.

About 12,000. Quite a lot, but nowhere near as members of staff such as the moderators. Whilst I've not been offered post of moderator on the site, I'm not about to go begging for it. Whilst I use aD a lot, I stay within one specific area almost all the time, and moderators are required for several parts of the forum, not just this one. Additionally I'm not always around here to help out. I usually am, but for example I will be away with no net access from this Saturday until the following Saturday. We all take holidays now and then, but even so, I'm not sure I'd want the required commitment of being a full time moderator.
As for the half-glue-half-paste trick, it should work, but it could be very fiddly, as you've seen RAM chips aren't exactly big. A better solution is probably to use the Alumina adhesive stuff mentioned previously. The method you describe has too much potential to end in a sticky mess!
