This is driving me mad. I have many AVI movies 'aquired' over the internet and they sync perfectly on VLC media player but on windows media player the audio runs out of sync.
The same problem occurs when I convert to dvd using Nero. It plays out of sync exactly the same as WMP. Is there a way of resolving this as I have many films I want to convert and watch om DVD.

It seems to me that your current version of Nero doesn't have the proper audio codecs to encode the AVI file to DVD suitably. Update your version. Alternatively, you can use you can use DVD Flick, a freeware. Here's a step by step guide for you to follow.
Download this application. Launch it. Locate the .AVI file. Click Audio Sync Tab, a video player will pop up. Now, adjust audio delay or frame rate (FPS) using sliders or appropriate buttons. Click Apply. Video player will start playing your file with applied settings. Adjust and apply these parameters multiple times to pick and choose necessary values for audio delay or FPS. So, try to experiment and to set appropriate audio delay or to change FPS (frames per second) settings for your .AVI file. Finally, close YAAI tool. When it asks the question: "Do you want to keep the changes?", click Yes.
Thank you very much friend, I shall give it a try. Out of interest why do you think that VLC player can play it without the audio going out of sync but nothing else can?

VLC player has the built-in capability to sync audio to video. Unfortunately, Windows Media Player doesn't come with a DVD codecs, so you must pick up one somewhere else. These codecs are necessary to convert one format to another; they enable your computer to decode the numbers on a disc into videos on the screen. Subsequently, AVI to DVD softwares use the same codecs to encode video files into multiple formats correctly. I have Nero, but never actually used it to convert my video files, because I'm finicky about the embedded codecs it uses to convert my AVIs to DVD. If all else fails, try the shareware ConvertXtoDVD. This software doesn't require installation of codecs to properly encode video files.
