Ok I have 2 computers in my house both running XP.

One is using a DLink DL-524 Wireless Router and the other has one of those Wireless Adapter USB's (DLink).

I'm wondering is there anyway of sending files to and from each of the computers? Is there any program that lets you do this?

Actully, Windows XP has this feature built in. Just enable file sharing on both computers (Start - My Computer and on the left of the window should be a tab called other places, click my network places and then click on "set up a home network or small office network") and enable file sharing. then make a folder shared by right-clicking on it and hitting properties and click on the sharing tab.

Cheers guys you got me on the right track...
I've got XP Home though.

Ok here's what I've done so far:

-I ran the Setup a Small/Home Office Network Wizard on both computer's. -Named the Workgroup the same on both computers.
-Allowed file and printer sharing.
-Enabled sharing on the shared documents folders on both computers.

Now when I go into Network Connections there's nothing new?
There's no new gateways/connections, same in Network Places.

If I open up "View Workgroup Computers" from Computer A (the one using the Router) it shows Computer A as an accessible network address, with Shared Documents and Printers accessible, obviously.

But when I try this from Computer B it says access to that Network/Work Group is denied and it doesn't have permission?

I have 1 comp, 2 laptops (2 using XP, one using Vista) a PS3 and an Xbox 360 all networked up in my house.

To transfer files between the 3 computers I literally went to the drive/folder I wanted to make available to the other computers, ie my c: drive, I then right clicked on it and chose properties, from the box that came up I then chose Sharing, it will say something like if you understand the risk but still want to share this drive click here. Once clicked youll get 2 options, local sharing and network sharing the first is to share folders with other users of the same computer, the second is to share files/drives with other computers. In the second box there are again 2 options, one uses Network Wizard the other just enables sharing, click the one for just enable sharing - then the box will change - click give this drive a name and then give the drive a name. You can then tick or untick the allow network users to change my files depending on whether you want to allow them just to access and use the files or whether you want them to beable to add to/change them.

Thats it for enabling.

Now on your other computer go to my network places and the drive you just enabled for sharing should show up.

Once youve done it once youll be amazed just how easy it is. I spent hours trying to go through the network wizard etc, but got nowhere, this way someone told me about and i had access across the network in under 10 mins.

Ps I also use a D Link router and as standard internal Lan to Lan communications are not blocked by the firewall but Wan to Lan is so you are as secure as you could be if your routers firewall is set up properly.

pepp77 Nice one :-)
I can now watch movies (on my laptop) stored in my main PC with out sitting in another room(I dont bother burning to disc as the rest of the household havn,t got the same taste)
so to follow on from this is it possible to hook my laptop up to my main TV?. The laptop is a HP NC6320, the Tv not so up todate is an LG 28" widescreen with 2 scart socks, 1 s-video sock and 1 side white, red and yellow socks
Can it be done?

Right according to HPs website your laptop has an s-video out socket on it - so yes it can - all you need is an s-video to s-video cable or an s-video to composite cable you connect the two and turn the external monitor function on (usually function (fn) + F4 but may vary and your laptop may do it via a presentation button.

Turn your TV to the correct channel and it should display.

You can also if you want ue your TV as an extended Desktop. If you right click on an empty area of your desktop (whilst the cable is connected to the TV) and choose properties-->settings there should be an option to extend your desktop to the TV as well as the laptop screen - I cant remember the exact thing to do as I dont have the cables to connect my laptop up at the moment.

Hope that helps.

Pepp77:

Thanks for your help buddy, I did what you said and I enabled Sharing on "My Documents" on Computer X right.

I go on Comp Y and I check Network Places and there's nothing there. But If I click on "View Workgroup Computers", Comp X shows up as an accessible Network Site, only when I double-click on it, it tries to open it for a second or two and then it says "Comp X is not accessible, you may not have permissions to access it.. etc..".

I have Windows Firewall disabled on both Computers, could it be something to do with the Router settings?

@ Amir
just a couple of extra things I did do. Reboot both X and Y so as to reset the network connections, I ticked the box allowing to access and change files, also you really should have your firewalls on but in exceptions tab make sure file and print shareing is ticked hope this helps for now
