I'm running Windows XP and recently reformatted my system to get a clean start. However, now I can not burn DVD or CD's. I have tried a few different versions of Nero to no luck. Here is the error log. Can anyone help? It's driving me mad, I'm just trying to backup a couple files. All my hardware and software is the same as before.

In my opinion, these are not top quality discs...try slowing your burn to 32X

I cant advise on your firmware at the moment my source is unavailable.

I will check this error out and reply asap.

EDIT:
Heres something I found on the error

Quote:
If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (amost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.

Please try the following solutions:

* Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.
* Try another brand of CD-R or CD-RW media.
* Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.
* Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
* Send the recorder in for service.

I would like to add to the list of tasks/advice that Gwendolin gave you:

Your burner's lenses could be dirty; get a can of compressed air for electronics and blow off any possible junk- cigarette smoke, dust...
Also, here is a link to something you might want to try also. I found that "fix" in several forums, it seems to work for many people that have the "power calibration" stinker:

No other PC, and yes I tried his recommendation. I'm leaning to either it has gone bad or the cables are bad. I ran Sony's test and it failed and generated an error report I emailed to them.

It may just be on the way out like you said. If you did have another pc handy that would be another way to tell.

You might want to try just have the dvd burner hooked up - disconnect the the DVD Rom and see if that makes a diff.

You best bet may be just to replace it.
