As an oldie, but completely new to all this, it sounds so confusing.
My understanding is that a film on a dvd is called VIDEO_TS, and when it's on a pc, it's a .avi (or another pc readable format)?
So l used a program (movavi video suite) to rip a VIDEO_TS file from a dvd and convert it to an avi file. Hurrah success, but it took over 6hrs to do it! Seems a blimmin' long time, is that right?
Now l want to edit this avi file to delete the first 1500 frames and the last 500 before converting it back onto a dvd. (It was taken from the tv, and l don't want to include the ads at the start and end of the show).
Movavi doesn't seem to do this, so is there an easy to use program out there that will let me view the avi file frame by frame and delete whatever frames l need to before converting it back to dvd?
Or, am l going about this all wrong? (six hours to convert it to avi and then another 2 hours to convert it back to divx seems a heck of a long time for just 1 1/2 hrs of showing time)!
I'm slowly (very) getting the hang of things, but some of your help out there would greatly assist.
Thank you
If your program ripped the DVD files to a folder on the hard drive before it converted them to AVI, then those files can be used by 'DVD Shrink' to edit out the advertising without converting the files.
The edited files can then be burned to disk as a new DVD without a loss of quality.
The first thing to check is to see if the ripped files are on the hard drive.
A DVD movie consists of an 'AUDIO_TS' folder (which is empty) and a 'VIDEO_TS' folder which contains the actual files.
Check to see if your program ripped those folders and files to your hard drive.
The 'AUDIO_TS' folder may not exist - it's optional.
If you cannot find the folder, then re-rip the DVD with 'DVDFab HD Decrypter', this is a free program.
There is a 'Re-author' button on DVD Shrink which you will use to edit the unwanted parts.
I believe that there is a guide at Afterdawn for this - let me know if there is a problem.
DVDFab HD Decrypter
Insert disk, run program select 'Main Movie' or 'Full Disk'
Thanks attar.
Yep, movavi converted the VIDEO_TS file to an avi file on disk.
But l've just copied the VIDEO_TS from dvd to a directory on disk, and I'll have a mess around with dvd shrink on this file (before conversion) as you suggest.
Many thanks.
My dvd is a dvd+rw (named DVD VR) with two files on it -
video_rm and video_ts.
As attar suggested, tried out dvdshrink. When l tried to open the dvd disk, it said invalid dvd navigation structure. I then tried to open the _TS file itself and it said invalid data in video_ts\vts_01_2.vob (???)
Then tried dvdfab. This copied the _TS file to another directory and l then tried shrink again on this file. It came up with a main movie file (yipee l thought) but all that was in were title files - no movie itself! (see what you mean by the re-authoring. It seems to be what l need in deleting frames, but can't load the movie itself)
Anyone have any ideas?
When DVD Shrink opens the folder (on the hard drive), it may show a number of titles (titles are movies) on the right side of the window.
The longest duration is generally the main movie title.
Drag that title from right to left, 'reauthor' and click on the little arrow logo.
Select the part of the movie you want to keep then backup.
