i keep coming across dvd-r or original dvd's that will not work in the 2.8 ghz pc, in either the old toshiba drive or the newer Sony dru-5ooax?
they either try to spin and are not recognised or ar just not recognised?

Anyone know how this can be fixed?
I would have burnt the DVD+r originally on the DRU500ax
the DVD's work fine in standalone player

OS = win2000
dvd sizes vary but look to be over 3 Gb(ish)

Download a great little program called AnyDVD, run it and then incert the DVD. See if this solve your problem.

PS, it could be your DVD drive region code. Here in the UK, we work on region 2. Check what region code your DVD drive is set at.

Could it be that the drives themselves dont recognize the media? (although I'd be surprised if the DRU500 didnt) -- that's the case with the LG DVDROMS at least, they dont read +R

Hey who's knockin the LG dvdroms...........LOL

Sorry Praetor......I have an LG Dvdrom GDR-8161B and I transfer all my dvd recordings from +r to -r using it.....and it plays them fine....

LOL....just doing my bit for 'LG Freedom'....LOL

Granted this does not mean any LG would read +r discs........

Magnetic...what software are you currently trying to use to view the dvd's?

Actually I do agree with you they are a little bit on the shite side and can be funny on media brands....mines a wee bit noisy aswell but does the job for now....

Still it does the job for my requirements and was easy on the wallet too.

Well, software I would use includes ANYDVD, SmartRipper, DVDShrink, DVDDecryptor etc...
All Latest Versions (as far as I know)

I tried some of my backups this weekend and it (pc) won't recognise some of the DVD's again in either drive.
Same with the originals, and then some will work with no hassle.
no bias between dvd5 or dvd9 either or with dvd- and dvd+.
The Media varies from 'nodefect' to 'ARita', etc'
I'm Region 2, and have tried foreign DVD's with same results.

Maybe the lazer's are in need of a clean?
haven't tried this as I don't want to damage anything (like the lazer, or should that be laser)

any recomendations?

I've noticed that on the originals if I clean the DVD's with alachol they will mostly work, not sure if this is due to bending the DVD's and the concave/convex nature of them of if there's some dirt on DVD's (never see any dirt), have also used a light abrasive (tooth powder), which produces similar results.
