emulator savestates???

i just read the stickie about being able to run the nes emulator with roms off a CD.

I would like to play this particular emulator but my HDD is already almost full. I am planning on running it off a CD, but if I do, where would all the savestates go?

i can go to me E: and see all the savestates i have for everything else i played up until now, but those games were played directly off my HDD.
will a folder be created automatically if i run the emu off a CD?

also, is there any lag or a noticeable increase in loading time for emu's run off a cd?
