I have a Cyberhome DVR1500 component DVD recorder that has somehow recorded 8.6 gigs of video to a 4.7 gig DVD+RW disc.
I recorded (At EP speed) the Sci-Fi pictures mini-series Battlestar Galactica
pt.1 and pt.2, which in total is about 4hrs. 15mins to one disc.
The disc properties show the actual file size to be 4.29 gigs but when the
disc is opened with DVD Decrypter and ripped (in file mode) to my hard drive,
both episodes total more than 8.6 gigs.
How is this possible?

If ther sun and the moon is pararell to mars - and the dvd-RW disc you where recording on have a little scratch about 1cm from the inner cirlcle, this can someeimes happen...

But, this is not possible, I think...

How is this Possible??? It ISN"T Possible and you are Mistaken....
When Useing Extended Play you record at a lower Resolution and bitrate so you get More Video on a DVD-R Like up to 6+ hours But you can not get more than 4.38gb on a DVD-RW no matter what...

My guess would be that when you record it the data is being compressed. Now when you open it with a program like this one or simila, it does not see it as being compressed and would then need that amount to make the disc in an uncompressed format. Though the quality would get no better.

I don"t think that would be it because 8gb of Uncompressed Video is only about 5 Minutes at Full DVD Resolution..So a 2 Hour Uncompressed Movie would be close to 200gb...

No, it's not a mistake because I have four different disc to prove it.
The file sizes vary from 6 gigs to more than 8 gigs and, when I rip them to my hard drive and try to burn them to a DVD+R, the data will not fit without transcoding the VOB files to a smaller size that yields horrific quality.
I refuse to erase the 8.6 gig disc so that the unbelievers can witness this anomaly. Maybe it's a blessing from electronic heaven, who wouldn't want a DVD burner that could store this much data on a standard DVD-/+RW?

Well Be Proud of yourself you have Just accomplished what Electronic Engineers Have been trying to do For the Last Few years, Make a 8.5gb Single Sided DVD-RW..and you accomplished it without Millions of Dollars in Hardware and without a degree in Enginering...You should Call up Guinneses Book of World records, You Could Be Famous and Rich and that DVD Recorder you have Is going to be worth Millions..How envyous I am...

You should Post How Long in Minutes the Video on the DVD is and the bitrate used to encode the Video and Audio....cheers

I'm not proud, just amazed of this discovery.
Perhaps I could sell my unit back to the manufacturer for a couple of hundred thousand in the hopes that they can reverse engineer the technology in this unit or, maybe not! What would this mean for the up coming dual layer disc, 17 gigs to one disc maybe? The 6 gig disc is 180 minutes at an average bitrate
of about 2.4 mbs and the 8 gig disc is 255 minutes at an average bitrate of also 2.4 mbs.
How do I post pictures?

Well I can tell you this for a Fact 255 minutes at 2.400kbs works out to 4.475 gb in File size so there is either 4.4gb of Padding on the Files or your PC is Lying to you....Cheers

Actually it's telling two lies because the DVD disc properties are 4.29 gigs and the hard drive properties are 8.23 gigs after ripping.
It should be one or the other!
When I open the VIDEO_TS folder from the disc or hard drive they both contain exactly 17 files. 5 Vts folders VTS_01_1 thru VTS_01_5 at 863,104kb for chapter 1 and, 5 Vts
folders VTS_02_1 thru VTS_02_5 at 863,104kb for chapter 2 along with the Navigation,VOB and BUP files, with a total of 708kb for these 7 files.

Once again, how do I post pictures?

Maybe your drive is a proto DVD+R9 (see) www.dvdrw.com/press/duallayer.htm
´´New dual-layer DVD+R technology DVD recordable capacity to 8.5 Gbytes...``
If anyone has any info as to the possibility of firmware upgrades to support the new format please do tell.

Didnt have time to read any comments, but my guess is that you are recording at the half the quality that is possible. Compression is allowing the larger quantity onto one disc. Dont crack up if someone mentioned this, im damn lazy at readin replies.
