ok, so my computer has been running slow lately, and i noticed that it's been using up a lot of memory. I only HAD 512mb (2x 256mb ram) of ram, so i decided to upgrade to 1gb. after installing the 1gb card, i now have 1gb plus 256mb of ram of memory. now my computer is freezing even more, programs get stuck and don't respond, etc. i have run antivirus, anti=spyware, and i have even defragmented the drive, and cleared up some disk space, but the condition seems to be getting worse, any suggestions on how to fix this?

Remove the old 256MB stick and leave the 1GB on its own. See if the problem still occurs.

What type of RAM is it? Could be a problem with the RAM either being too fast or too slow?

I would unplug your internet connection first. Next disable your antispyware and see if you still got slowdown, if not disable your antivirus and see if that is causing your slowdown. If that doesn't do anything, use the free ccleaner program to check your registry for errors.

If that doesn't do anything check your hard drive is setup for dma correctly. Unplig any usb card readers if you have them. Maybe move your hard drive to a different ide or sata connector. If you are using IDE drives make sure 2 of them aren't on the same cable setup as masters or slaves.

Also don't rule out an overheating video card, put a case fan pointing directly on the video card.

Worst case the hard drive might just not be working right, when I had serious slowdown and freezing, I replaced the hard drive and that fix it.

Also the program "ultraISO" and other similar ISO/virtual drive programs can cause windows explorer to crash and freeze.

But it doesnt make sense that after more RAM was added, the computer was hanging more. I would say try Sams solution first because it just sounds more logical. Can you post full specs of your pc please?
