I'd agree with that, no offense intended, but try not to tell too many people they're getting ripped off if there's nothing they can do about it. Over the years I've spent about £5000 on PC parts worth around $7000, when the exchange rate for the US dollar has never been below 1.7 . Go figure.

If I'm honest, disregard my previous comment. You can see what's going on in the official PC building thread and OC thread. I'm really in no position to criticise you, when I'm ten times as guilty myself.

See you in a few days Abuzar.

lol don't worry about it. i know that australia gets screwed on everything and i don't see it changing too soon. but i like australia and personally, i think it's the best place for someone to grow up.

what about a case? something thats cheap, easy to install everything in, and wont overheat and melt into a pile of goo (or molten metal).

Well you do want a case with good airflow. What's your price range?

This is an excellent case if a bit pricey.

that case would be nice but its a bit outside my price range. i was hoping for something that costs less than $100... around the $60 mark would be better lol. as i've said before, i don't care what it looks like, i just want something that stays cool.

edit: just had a look and all full towers from techbuy are over $150. will a midi tower be okay?

Mid towers cool perfectly well enough for any gaming PC.
These are quite good, and a bit more in your price range.

thanks. that was actually one of the cases that i was looking at. do you think that the stock fans will work well enough?

i think i'm all sorted now. my budget is completely blown (my total is up to $1,603.75 AUD now) but i guess that's what they're made for. i'll head to some local shops tomorrow morning and see if they can give me a decent deal.

just in case you're interested here's the monitor i'm getting if i order my parts from techbuy:
http://www.techbuy.com.au/p/72503/MONITO...ishiDV196BW.asp
it's not my dream monitor, but for the price, i dont think i can do much better.

one final question: do i need to get a UPS?

edit: why did i have to look at the "New PC build oppinions" thread. the monitor that sam posted there looks so much better than the 19" mitsubishi....

The stock fans in coolermaster cases are a bit naff, but unless you've a high powered PC, they probably do the job well enough.

about the monitor, sorry mate, but on a strict budget, you have to take all components into account. 19" monitors typically aren't that much cheaper than 20s, so if you had anything spare in the coffers, you could try for that, but by the sounds of it, you may have to settle for the 19. It's not a bad monitor by any means, but you obviously do have to use a lower resolution.
As far as the UPS goes, I wouldn't bother unless you have regular power failures where you live. Unless you get more than 3 a year, it doesn't seem cost effective.

That's a solid parts list, but I'd recommend trying to get a slightly higher calibre brand of HD3870 if you can, such as HIS, Sapphire, Asus, Gigabyte or MSI.

On top of the looks, it's well built, and has a more powerful/quieter cooler than the stock versions. It can probably overclock higher too, all told.

You guys realize he is using a E6420? Don't let him do that! lol

Get this CPU instead.

http://www.techbuy.com.au/p/79402/CPU_CO...X80570E8400.asp

I'm also kinda pissed that your Store doesn't sell crucial RAM. Call around your Local stores to see if you can get Crucial Ballistix Ram for about the same price.

only one of my local shops sells crucial ram and it's at a ridiculous price (it was something like $215 for 2GB). i also looked at a couple of other online stores but none of them sold it either. seems kind of odd to me. is it an american brand or something? in any case, i think i'll just stick with corsair.

i will get the e8400 instead of the e6420 though. i only chose the e6420 because it won the consumer choice award on newegg.... i should probably stop listening to that site.

if there's nothing else that should be changed, i'll probably be ordering my parts around this time tomorrow.

Well the higher multiplier on the E8400 should certainly help. This means you won't have to overclock your RAM as much. It seems Sam can't get this RAM to overclock well at all so that's why I was a bit weary of it. You should be fine though, even with the RAM at stock speed you're looking at 3.6 Ghz if you decide to overclock it(which you should).

Good Luck! I'm sure it's gonna be a great computer!

Thing is, I'm using four sticks of it, so that may skew my overclocking progress. That and I was running it at 1.9V, which isn't the typical voltage it should have. All told it probably overclocks really well.
As for the E8400, do it. On air cooling you can get it beyond 4Ghz easily.

i'm aware that i sound like a newb saying this... could be because i am, but how do you overclock?

i'm reading up on it now but if one of you could give me just a brief overview of how it works, it would save me a lot of time.

i'll make sure i've thoroughly done my homework before actually doing it, but if someone could give me the "gist" of it, i'd really appreciate it.

You go in your motherboard setting and change the FSB. It's really simple, I'll show you what it looks like. You just need to know how to multiply lol.

a) get good parts
b) get into the BIOS
c) up the front side bus as high as you can without getting crashes
d) increase the voltages and latencies as required so you can get the FSB even higher - CARE with this one!

back again. thanks for the help with overclocking. much appreciated.

i'm afraid i need help again. techbuy no longer sells the motherboard that i was planning on getting so instead i'm thinking of getting this:

http://www.techbuy.com.au/p/80123/MOTHER...GA-EP35-DS3.asp

to be honest, i've got no idea what a decent motherboard looks like. i just chose this one because it's made by the same brand and is around the same price.
