I am new to burning & ripping etc and im trying to pick things up bit by bit.

I would like to burn an AVI file to a CD-R.

I am using Nero and I select new compilation - cd, then video cd (as I would like to play the CD-R in my stand alone dvd player)

The AVI file stored on my P.C. is 700MB, but when I select it to use in this process, I see that the size appears to increase to 1,058MB.

After encoding is 100% complete i get the message:

There is not enough space to burn this compilation onto this disc.
Please insert another disc that provides more space.

I would appreciate any help/support on this matter.

Thanks in advance

Hi 275gemini
Pick the Data cd option instead of video cd.

Does you're standalone support DivX/Avi playback? If not you'll need to use Nero Vision to convert it to a dvd compliant format and burn it to DVD to play.

Thanks for your response binkie7.

Dont think it does, i just assumed that by selecting the vcd option that my dvd player would then be able to play it. (excuse my lack of knowledge).

Can I convert it to a dvd compliant format and burn it to DVD to play by using Nero StartSmart? thought I would ask before I progress with nero vision.

If so, how do i go about it?

May I ask how long converting it to a dvd compliant format and burning it to DVD takes? as picking the Data cd option and purchasing a dvd player that supports DivX may be a better option for me and less time consuming.

Hmmm depending on your pc specs I'd say roughly 1.5 - 2 hrs. Now burning it as a data dvd or cd - 5 minutes :)
So a dvd player that supports DivX might be a better option for you. They're pretty cheap now.

But yes it would need to be converted using something like Vision - the video cd option won't work on the player unless it supports DivX.

In SmartStart go to 'create and edit' at the top then pick 'author,edit and capture video'. This will open Vision.
Here's a guide for Nero 7 - it's similar for Nero 8 - link

Those new players that say support divx will play a dvd with 6 .avi's or .divx's? I have like 5 old dvds loaded with dvix/avi's and only one player in our house(which isnt mine) can play data discs.

@275gemini
You're welcome.
Post back if you need any further help.

@XMayhemX
They should - I had a Philips that pretty much played anything I threw at - even dvd's with several avi's on it - though w/o having a menu fast forward is the only option.

Yes, if you buy a DVD player that support Divx playback, it will play your Divx movies burned as data on a DVD.

You burn it as data if your player can play Divx of a CD. Otherwise, you can make a Video CD.
