I run info tool and it come back with all red x's under my dvd-rw drive write column. I have nero 8. I know my drive works, before getting nero 8 I had 7 and copied dvd movies using dvd shrink. Can't use dvd shrink with nero like I did with 7 but after putting on hard drive with shrink I burned dvd with nero recode. Another Question, can I just use recode without using shrink first? Thanks Linda

Yes, you can use Nero Recode instead of DVD Shrink, you don't have to use DVD Shrink at all.
Not sure what the red Xs are, can you post a screen sgot?

I couldn't figure out how to attach or send a screen shot I had took of all the red x's. I'm not totally sure yet but I think I figured out the problem. I had no idea what I was doing, first time using that part of Nero, I first tried using it without a disk in the drive (duh), then when I did put a disc in it was a movie disk, (double duh). I believe it did that because the disk wasn't a recordable disk. When I get a chance I'm going to put a blank in and see what happens. Thanks

This is a triple DUH. I run that test in Nero Info Tool again and it come up the same way. During the test it asked for a disk to be inserted, I had put a blank one in both my drives. It was asking for one in the top drive so I put a movie disk in since it didn't work on a blank. The top drive is not a recordable drive just the bottom one. I thought it was giving me the results of both drives but when I switched info tool to the other drive I got some green check marks. My ignorance is what caused the problem. Info tool is working fine. Now what can I do about me? Thanks A Bunch (PS) I joined Image Shack so I could post the screen shot but I run out of time waiting for them to send me an email with a temp password.

I did it, I'm so proud of myself. The green arrows you see under write weren't there until I figured out what I was doing wrong.

That is actually a description of your drive, the specs. The red "X" in the HD DVD Write/Read column for example , it means that your drive does not handle HD discs. Same with Blu Ray. In the DVD column, it tells you that it can only write on DVD+R or DVD+RW, and it can only read DVD+/- R(W) and DVD-ROM, no support for Dual layer, no writing nor reading. Old drive.

Your're right my drive is about 4 to 6 years old. The disks it will burn is all I need to use. If I had a drive that would burn HD or Blu Ray my dvd player hooked up to my tv wouldn't play them, it's older than my computer. Can't afford to replace it. I would like to get a new computer so I can have more room on my hd. When I do though I might as well get a new dvd player. That's in the far far away future though. Have A Good One & Thanks

Actually a new good burner is less that $30 at tis time. As for HD and Blu Ray burners...they are still out of reach, a blank blu ray disc costs about as much as a regular DVD burner!!!!
