Hey guys!
See, I decided to go ahead and do the cheap option of making the computer faster without buying a new one. So I finally got everything assembled, it was all working, and then: it went back to the boot screen.
So here's my problem: I'll start up my computer fine, it will go to the "how do you want to run windows today" screen, and then when I choose something, the screen turns black and then the thing restarts.
I'm not sure what it is. I'm trying to boot from an IDE hard drive, and I have conflicts with my SATA hard drive (probably because it's trying to boot first and for some reason it has never worked to boot first) but I can change the boot order and all that. Even with the IDE alone it doesn't work.
My specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz/4MB/1333MHz Stepping E0
G31T-M Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
2GB PC2-5300 DDR2 667 RAM

Try with only one stick of RAM in. If no luck, try the other stick on its own. If still no success, post back.

That is only one stick of ram ;)
Is it possible I have it in the wrong slot? I mean, I'm no dummy, I've got the damn thing in a RAM slot, but I do have two. I was just wondering if one gets priority or something like that.
I don't know. I'm away from home right now so I'll try putting it in the other slot when I can. Then I will post backs.
Thanks for the help!

Try the other slot. Memory slots go wrong more often than you might think.

Aww..
It didn't work.
It's still giving me the same dumb thing. I would have tried to reformat the drive already, but there is some sensitive information that I would like to keep. I have a few projects on there and am not looking to erase them.
What could it possibly be? I checked out my bios settings and it turns out that the IDE drive is ringing up as 3rd master, but it's the only one that's plugged in. I already solved the conflict with my SATA drive, so that's done.
I'm looking at a couple of tutorials...saying that an XP HDD doesn't like to be moved on motherboards. I will put the basics back together on the other motherboard and do what it says if this is the case. But it's kind of time-consuming.
Well, let me know what you guys think!
Thanks for the help!

if that xp hd was from another pc which uses a different motherboard then xp is barfing on you as you are not supposed to do that. if both boards use same chips then is okay & maybe if same manufacturer then most likely can still do it but if different then xp barfs. save your info & do a fresh install.

Aw XD
Well I've got this tutorial here:
How To Move Xp Harddrive To New Motherboard
really easy. but this only works if the original motherboard and harddrive still work. so put it back together. for newbies, go to control panel, double-click the system icon, go to hardware tab, and click device manager button. find the IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLERS and expand the tab. not the primary or secondary controller, but right-click the first controller. choose update driver. choose the option to install from a list or specific location. click next. now choose the (don't search. I will choose the driver to install) option. click next. now highlight the Standard Dual Channel Pci Ide Controller. click next. the Standard controller will install. now reboot. log in. the standard controller is completely installed. you can now shutdown the computer, remove your harddrive, and it will boot with the new motherboard. i've done this 24 times on 12 different computers. it works.

sorry for the garbage. You think it would work? I really don't want to reformat...

I wish. But it's not like it would do me much good anyways. The damn mobo I picked out only has one IDE connector ;)
Is there such thing as an IDE splitter? It sounds a bit crazy to me, but this day in age, there are endless possibilities.
I will try to follow that tutorial in about half an hour.
Thanks for your help.

A whole bunch of files. 300gigs of apps, movies, music and games. Something I'm not looking to erase.
But seriously, about that splitter, do they make those?
Thanks again.

no as each ide connector can only controll 2 ide drives which is why there is only 3 connectors on the ide cable. 1 for the motherboard & 2 for drives. can get a pci ide controller card to give you another ide connector for 2 more drives.

That's quite alright ;)
I think this should do it.
I really have a barebone PC right now (i'll post pix tomorrow). Hopefully this works. If it doesn't, be sure that I will come and edit this with my problem!
Thanks for everyones help! I really appreciate it.
EDIT: So I finally got it to work, however I have a few new problems. My video is screwed up way beyond belief, I don't have an ethernet driver, and a few other things I can't remember right now. I'm thinking I might just have to back it all up and then do a clean install of Windows XP.
Also, whenever I get on the internet, and then try to do something, such as load up FireFox, the entire computer freezes.
Thanks for the help guys!
