I would say go for an external, forstly it costs more to buy an internal an have it fitted.

Secondly it is easier to transfer data between 2 machines.

Hope this helps.

I think i understand what ddp is saying.

you may have only damaged the Enclosure (The casing it is held within.)
Which means you may still have a working HDD.

You could either connect the external to you're pc (Making it an internal) an check to see if you have broke the HDD.

Or you could buy a replacement enclosure but risk the chance of having to buy another HDD.

I would say the best thing to do is have you're external checked an go from there.

As i said before though, an external will be cheaper to buy than an internal.

Im pretty sure it was the actual hdd becuase there was a bunch of clicking noises coming from inside it and when i googled it i read about it being useless.

most likely the drive is scrap but still might be able to retieve info off it maybe. if external enclosure still good then get another hd for it.

Im sorry to say but gettin info off the HDD is not in my field of knowledge.

However i have heard of two ways it can be done.

1, is buy using an HDD recovery program. (you make the HDD an internal an run the program, resart you're machine an it will do a scan on the selected drive.) If it picks the drive up.

2, there is a machine that can read the actual disks from inside an HDD one at a time, an will allow you to save data to another HDD or disk.

Hope this is of some use.

Lets us know how you get on.

Just buy a new external, if you try an buy an internal they will have to find the type that will match you're laptop buildplan. (an this will cost more to have it fitted as well.)

It also works out cheaper to buy an external as they are so widely used prices have dropped.

Seagate do an 250Gb Hdd for £79.99 at amazon.com

But the best thing you can do is go to you're nearest computer shop an look for any deals they have on.

Is the External to be used for running software and games or just for storage?

If a hard drive is to be used mainly for gaiming it would be best to have an internal as most programes instlall to C:\... (Internal drive) Something or over, so keep removing the external with games on may cause problems.

However it will work, its just down to price and personal choice.

Let me know how you get on.
