well not quite, what clonedvd 2 does is write a temp file to the HDD then writes the file to a blank disc once that is done the temp file is deleted as soon as you close out the program. if your buying remember to use the 20% coupon code they have going! It is a great program

I just did another test just using AnyDVD together with my usual copying software (MyDVD+); with AnyDVD running in the background I was able to copy directly to a DVD+R without writing anything to the HDD first. Very slick! Apparently CloneDVD is only necessary if you need to compress or otherwise manipulate the source data prior to burning the final copy.

Though I am very impressed with AnyDVD, it appears that DVDfab Platinum has some additional functionality, such as the ability to split a Movie onto two single layer discs without loss of quality, and DVD to Mobile. This last ability requires an additional purchase from Slysoft. Am I missing anything? Is there anything important that one of these programs has that the other does not? Any further comments appreciated? Thanks.

you yes can still split the movie with clonedvd 2 with the siccors to two dvd-5s. no it doesn't have I-pod capability CloneDVDmobie does but its a different program you have to buy. dvdfab platinum has it built in .I would say dvdfab platinum is the best bang for the buck since slysoft switched to the euro

Is there anyother way of ripping it besides DVDFab HB decrypter ? coz everytime i try to open it with a dvd disk i want to back up it will close seconds after..on its own..any ideas? thanks

you might try a clean reinstall

dvdfab decrypter could have a conflit with other software on your machine, thats hard to pin down

have you tryed anydvd ? its a good ripper too

2. dvd shrink wants to burn using the nero 8 program i have installed. how do i set it up to use with imageburn.

3. if i want to spend the money...what is the best program(s)to have?

thats your choice dvdfab platinum is less expensive(49.00) nowadays than clonedvd 2 + anydvd but there is a coupon code for the slysoft programs right now(which makes it about 79.00 for both programs) both have a free 21 day trial so check both out and see how you like them. you can't go wrong with either one

with anydvd you can use clonedvd 2(pay program) dvd shrink(freeware) or nero recode 2(since you have nero you already have it) DVD Rebuilder (its an encoder with very high quality but takes awhile to use theres a freeware version and a pay version) Intervideo DVD Copy6 (pay program)

Nice little addition there ZoSo. :) I'm glad that you're helping people and NOT plastering those girls all over AD again. :P j/k buddy.... hehehe.

I've had all those progies and the only one that I've paid for is the PRO version of DVD ReBuilder. Great progie and excellent support!!

I used AnyDVD and Clone2 but didn't see enough of a "change" or "improvement" from some of the other FREE progies to warrant a purchase. It's personal opinion I know but save your money for now and give the FREE progies a go and see how you do. :)

thats why i online both freeware and pay program options in my first post. pay programs are easier for newer members to use (less steps = less confusing) or like with me its more a time issue using the pay programs

Hi folks. I really wanted to stroll in here victoriuosly and announce that I, unlike other newbs, have followed all theinstructions and succesfully burned a disc using the 1-34 step instructions. However, the "Burn ISO Image File with IMGBurn" does not appear in my DVD Shrink selection.

william all I can see is the possibility that your drive will not write to 16X media but I'm sure it's done it in the past. Maybe you got a bad disc or it's dirty. If you didn't already, try another disc or a completely different manufacturer (MID). ;)

Is it better to make backup copies in DivX format (provided your player is DivX certified) for superior quality compressions?

Actually, I was interested in testing this out myself. Let's look at this codec (DivX) objectively...

You have a DVD that has a main movie size of say 6.5GB. DVD's use mpeg2 for video compression and let's say it has a main audio track of AC3 at 448Kbs.

You want it to fit onto a DVD-5 (4.35GB), so the usual method is using mpeg2 and creating a regular DVD. You could use one of the regular (quite fast) transcoding applications like DVD Shrink, CloneDVD2, Nero Recode etc. etc. You will get decent results but not optimum.

To get the very best mpeg2 recompression, you will need to use a method like Cinema Craft Encoder/DVD rebuilder or equivalent that does a full motion search 2 pass encode.

However... What about using DivX (or even better AVC/h264) to recompress the video, whilst not looking to make small file sizes ready for internet distribution (or saving HDD space). What about using these more efficient codecs to use the entire space on a DVD-5? I am certain that the video produced would be far superior to a mpeg2 encode of the same bitrate.

That's where the future is anyway. Stand alone players (Blu-ray) have full support for AVC (h264), and many more are supporting mpeg4 sp/asp (DivX/Xvid) etc.

ZoSoIV, please excuse me for taking this thread a little off topic, but I do think Vrex's idea is one worth exploring further.

its not off topic at all thats what the thread is here for. dvd fab platinum can convert to several different formats ,MPEG-4/DivX/XVID/H.264 AVI/MP4 files so consider that

Yes, I was referring to the fact that I was diverting away from the topic of standard DVD authoring (mpeg2).

I personally wouldn't use DVDFab Platinum for mpeg4 encoding as I prefer to have more control over my encoding but it could be a good choice for beginners. :-)

What if I want to back up my DVD-R. Should I folow the same guide or there is a difference between store bought DVDs and DVD-R?

This is what I was getting at. In fact, I believe an entire 2 hr Blu-ray movie will fit on a single 4GB DVDR (in 720p) in mpeg4. This would be an alternative for backing up BD titles, at least until the cost of BD blanks comes down. Someone might consider writing a guide to do this.

Your DVD-R should have no protection, so is just a simple copy process. You can simply use ImgBurn to rip/burn the disc.
