Nero Express and H264 compatibility for DIVX file

I was using Nero Express to burn a data disk of avi files (DIVX) and there was a check off to burn in a high compatibility H264 mode for H264 players. But then it also said the files burned in this mode might be different from the original DIVX files.
Does anyone have any idea what that means? Doesn't DIVX = H264? Or is it a branch developing its own proprietary standards like DIVX Ultra? Is it preferable to burn as H264? Can DVIX players read H264 but H264 player can't read DIVX?

Here's the actual wording from the two options in Nero Express:

Seach and replace he FourCC codes in *.avi files while burning. The source files will not be changed.
Increase compatibility of MPEG-4 video files (DIVX) with MPEG-4 cpmpliant DVD playes.
Warning: the *.avi files burned to the disk may not match the original source files.
So how would the files change?
Wikipedia says:

Can it be that Nero does use Qpel and global motion compensation which the DivX players may not use?

I think the new Divx players support QPel and Gmc. By changing the FourCC, the information at the begining of the file is changed, information that tells the player how to read the file.

Thanks for your replies Cyprusrom. I'm wondering from what you said earlier whether DivX is essentially a "poor man's" H264 encoder?

I don't think standalone players that support H.264 are widespred(or even available?). The codec is mostly used at this time in MKV containers for online sharing and I think some of the new camcoders can encode using H.264. I think H.264 encoded videos can be played some in Blu Ray players. So, it is not as popular with the standalone players as Divx.

Getting back to my original question if one chooses this option in Nero Express:

How are the files modified?

If I understand correctly, only the header is modified, the FourCC code, that tells your player how to decode the file.

Possibly but the seeming default setting seems to say it will modify the FourCC codes.

I assume it's default since I don't see any way to shut it off. Guess it's time to download the Nero Express Manual.

i wonder the same thing too. When i burned the videos (in .avi format) , some of them couldn't play on my DVD player, but when i burned them with that option checked, they worked really fine. I have no idea if it made any changes to the videos or not (the quality for instance)
