Advice on new build for gaming

Hi,
My current specs include:
An AMD Sempron 3000+
1.5 gig of DDR 400
NVidia 7600GT (Winfast AGP Conversion)
This has served me well to date and has quite competently played F.E.A.R, FARCRY, COD4 and to my suprise can play the CRYSIS Demo on low settings at a playable average of 25 FPS.
I want games like CRYSIS and future stuff to be more than "playable" but I cant afford an "Ultimate Gaming Machine".
I have been steering towards something like an AMD Athlon 5000 X2 dual core jobby and would probably be looking at 2Gig of DDR2 RAM and maybe an 8800 or 8600 GT PCI-E G/Fix card.
I appreciate that the G/fix card plays a vital role when gaming but will I get a decent upgrade in Gaming performance from my choice of CPU?? I'm not that bothered about processing power for other PC tasks.

Ok guys Lay off the pipe and back away lol! Don't recommend AMD cpus!
How much are you looking to spend? Forget about AMD CPUs, they're no good, even for the price.
Think of a Core 2 Duo, an 8800GT and a GA-P35-DS3.
I would honestly wait till March as this stuff is found to come down in price.

Mmmm, thanks guys.
I thought the tussle between AMD and Intel CPU's was always going up & down just like it is between Nvidia and ATI g/fix cards.
I cant really compare with actual circumstances & experiance though because the last Intel I had was only PIII 600Mhz and my Sempron 3000+ blows it away.
I like the price of that 8600GT on Newegg (thnks DXR88)but I'm in the UK.
Thanks all for the advice. I'll have to consider my CPU options further but I dont want to fuel an Intel vs AMD thread either.

It's no argument, Intel CPUs are obviously superior now. this is NOT the P4 era, when AMD reigned supreme. Now AMDs are pretty much crap.
A 2.3 ghz Core 2 Duo will beat out a 3Ghz AMD X2, and the AMDs don't overclock nearly as well.
The CPU I linked to will easily do 3.2Ghz.

I'm not going to pull up charts but for the last year or two Intel got a step ahead. Instead of paying to upgrade my AMD I learned to OC (a little). Now Intel is 2 steps ahead with their new compared to AMD's new, so I am currently building a new system.
Nobody building a new system looks at AMD chips right now when better ones can be had for the same price.
Abuzar-do you have a link to when the next round of Intels going on the market? You said March in this and another thread, I wanna have my "man cave" (no jokes pls) ready by then since I have every other component but CPU & mobo.

They were gonne come out at the same time as the E8400, but they got delayed.

Still waiting on the E8400...
<Sigh>
If you really want a top end CPU, wait for that, but if you want it built in less than two months time, go for something like an E6750, it's still not a bad CPU by any means.

yea actually I was thinking too, the E8400 has been out for at least a few weeks now, and the prices are about the same as some E6xxx series processors. Not sure if they go outside the U.S., but microCenter has 'em on sale for 189.99!!!!! thats where I got mine from :P
