PC will not turn on at all, everything seems dead (help please)

Today I was working on my PC for a while and I noticed a smell like something was just starting to burn so I shut it down. I checked everything and could not find where it was coming from. I tried to turn back on the PC and nothing happened at all. No lights no power nothing just dead. I build the computer myself about a year ago and I have had no problems at all with it. This is the first issue I have had. I put in another power supply and I still get nothing. Could it be that my motherboard just went bad? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

no nothing at all. None of the lights light up and none of the fans come on. It's just like if it was not plugged in.

have you tried pluging it into a different outlet. there could be a problem with were the computer is pluged in or the power supply is bad.

You may of burned out the motherboard.
Try replacing the power cable you used incase that is the problem.

Question: Is your computer in an area where lots of air can get to it, or is it quite restricted?

If it is restricted this may have caused an overheat and burned out your motherboard.

If the machine fans where not running properly because of age or dust (and remember computers are dust collectors in a big fashion)
and it got to hot you have problems.

But hopefully it is something simple an cheap to solve, i hate it when a machine i build breaks.

I had a motherboard burn out on me a long time ago and it's just more of a pain in the butt to fix than anything.

I did find out its not the motherboard though. I had a cool fancy neon 550W power supply that was the problem. I put in a new power supply and that fixed the power problem.

Now I have another problem I took everything out of the computer including the motherboard to check it all and when I put it back together with the new power supply and turned it on my red HD light stays on and the computer monitor will not engage. It's like the video card is not getting the monitor signal to the monitor. Do you think I could have put the case panel wires in the wrong place on the motherboard and thats why the HD light stays on and could the affect the video card if thats the case? Thanks for all your help guys I really appreciate it.

re-seat your video card and RAM. Does your case have a speaker attached? If so, are you getting any POST beeps? With what you've given me, I would think the panel connectors are correct. Some mobo's keep the HDD LED on until the board passes POST.

i think it´s the mobo cuz even thogh when a psu is down a light on the mobo will be on, i would try with a different psu thought cuz sometimes they could die completely

Hate to say it, but there's a good chance when the psu went it probaly sent a power surge to the video card.
I would try the video card in a friends computer and see if it works.

Yes. Usually, when your video card is not working, your video card is broken. Not your motherboard >.< duh

lol sorry to say that I couldn't resist.

Seriously man... wow... I had that happen a while back. My power supply went and took almost the whole PC with it. The only things I saved were the RAM and the drives.

I feel for you :(
