Hi, this is the first Wi-Fi router that I've bought, so I was wondering is it alright? I mean this model, it should be pretty good, but at what distance does it operate well? Is this a good affordable choice? Before I have wired D-Link router, but now we have too many PCs and not enough wires to connect them all, any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

linksys routers are reliable. i have the WRT54GS model for two years, and it's been holding up very well. the WRT54G/GS/GL routers are very easy to use, and affordable. just pop in the install cd, and follow the instructions.
as for the wireless capabilities, you have to put in cetain factors. the placement of router, what room the router is in, what barriers the signal is going through. general rule is to have the router as high as possible, in an open space, with no obstructions in the way. unfortunately, for the new WRT54G routers, the antennas are built in, so you cannot swap them for a higher dBi set.
you can increase the wireless power, by using third-party firmware (like dd-wrt). but once you upload third-party firmware, your warranty is voided, so if it breaks, you have to get another router.

hey thanks. I heard the range was, 30 feet. Is that enough for a mid-sized house? Do wireless things.......do they produce harmful waves? Thanks.

give or take, it should be around 30ft. if your house is steel reinforced, then the wireless signal will be hard to get, because the signal will most likely be confined to the room the router is in.
you can produce better signal by using outdoor antennas. they produce much more signal, and you have the ability to use your wireless outside. you will have to find a spot in your house where you're willing to run wires outside that connect the antennas to the router. once again, if you get the new WRT54G router, you cannot remove the antennas as they are integrated; not sure if the new WRT54GS/GL routers have integrated antennas.
wireless signals do no harm, whatsoever.

the wireless n router is nice. i would upgrade to the n, but my WRT54GS is holding up well. linksys is very reliable.

Hi, so I am gonna set up the router, maybe today, but since N version has more distant range I was thinking about that "encryption" protection. Is there like a CD that I pop in where I configure the COMPLETE security of the router so no-one else would get into that or I need to do that separately by typing something like 192.168.0.1 in the browser and configure that there? My internet speed is 1MBit/sec, (120kilobytes approx) so if any other bastard's on the line.... I dunno what's going to happen. Thanks for all the replies.

when you setup the router, it will guide you all the way. you will have to use the install cd to set it up for the first time, and it will have the steps for encrypting your wireless network.
if anyone else gets in your network, most likely you'll notice a speed drop. encrypting is always recommended when setting up your wireless network.

I have a Linksys WRT54GS. If I am downloading and my son is wants to play games online, his ping goes to high and I have to give in and turn off any downloading I am doing.
As I have a 20meg broadband is there any way I can split the bandwidth so say for example I could use 10 meg of it and he uses the other 10 meg to overcome this problem and keep us both happy?

If you have 20MB broadband, I can't imagine that your son has any problems with playing games online, when you are downloading.

I cannot imagine a server that would give you that sort of bandwidth... and by downloading...do you mean by like Torrent and stuff? Cuz I never seen anyone randomly going to sites and downloading stuff on daily basis. If it's like a torrent or w/e, I think in options it has "max download rate and max upload rate" ..or so.

i also have this router and i have a question about it. well its more of routers in general. does the ammount of people connecting to it slow down the speed? like would 2 people connecting to a router have the same speed as if say 20? if they were all getting the same signal and stuff.

I have had this same router for about 6 months now and I still haven't gotten it to work wirelessly. I have no idea what the problem is. My other computer just doesn't detect it, anyone know what's up with that? Thanks

Does the wireless card on your other computer support the same encryption? Also is your SSID broadcast setting turn on? If your friends bring over a laptop and cannot detect the router then its probably the ssid.

Ok so here's what I did; I moved the router closer to my computer, and it did detect it, but it would not connect to it and the connection on it was low.

Try changing the frequency in your router settings. Sometimes if someone living close to you has their router set to the same frequency it will cause problems.

Type your routers ip into the address bar in your internet browser (lynksys default ip is 192.168.1.1). You will be asked for your username and password. If you never entered either of these you can just hit enter. Then go to the wireless tab under basic wireless settings and change the wireless channel. If that doesn't work you may need to update the routers firmware.

lol, I still haven't opened this router...guess I will do that when I upgrade my internet... I was only excited to do taht so i could connect my DS to it and stuff...
