I have both a CD player/recorder and a dvd player/recorder that play and read disks fine but I can not burn to either. I do have the write cd feature checked in Windows XP. I have been using memorex CD-r disks to record. I have attached the log file from Nero in hopes that someone can help me out. By the way, I did call Microsoft and spent an hour on line with them, without resolution.

You might have trouble with XP bruning because you are missing Wnaspi32.dll.
Download and install a ASPI layer.
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/aspi.cfm
Nero has it's own.
CDRALW2K is the driver for Roxio.
Nero InCD and Roxio conflict.
Download and run the zap tool to get rid of Roxio.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml
Try again and see how it goes.
Also you DMA is off. Read this to fix it.

56delray..thanks for the quick response. I used the roxio cleanup tool as you mentioned. In my device manager under ide/adapi controllers the only thing listed is "nvidia nforce controller", there is no primary IDE or secondary IDE channel. So I can't change the DMA. Any suggestions?

Well I was missing some of the adapi drivers, but still had the same problem. I may try to delete the NVIDIA drivers next, but I don't have the option of just deleting the IDE driver

Why not. If you uninstall the drivers and reboot, the system will seek the best drivers.
edit
Try using the unistall at the device manager for the IDE.
P.P.S.
Try to burn DVDs with ImgBurn.

56delray,
you are a genius! Removed NVIDIA driver from IDE controller and after reboot, three different windows drivers loaded, so now I have primary and seconary IDE controller listed. DMA was listed as 4 and 2 respectively and on my first try I was able to burn a CD with Nero at one of the lower speeds. Thanks sooo much!
