alright so i have a task ahead of me; i want to rip (nearly) my whole dvd collection to my hdd for streaming. i have over 2000 dvds, so i want a ripper that is very fast, gives good quality, and saves space (say 600-800 megs per movie).
now i know a good deal of this has to do with what format you save in so we can skip over that. just wanted to know what everyone's favorite ripper is so i can do some testing around, willing to spend up to $50 for this but prefer freeware :)
thanks for everyone's input!

To do it with freeware, you need to rip with DVDFab HD Decrypter and then convert to an AVI/mpeg4(to make it 700mb or so; there are plenty free software to do that)

If you want to spend the money, DVDFab Platinum is your best bet, it decrypts/rips/converts, all in one.

In total agreement with Cyp here. DvdFab is the main program i use to back up my movies.

@cyp i actually already have dvdfab plat but it takes too long for me lol (anywhere from 1.5 hrs to 2 hrs usually). i recently started using clonedvd mobile using "generic" profile and it takes about 40 minutes. that may be the best option for me right now

@iluvendo
obviously not lol... but i dont intend on doing ALL my dvds and it certainly wont be done all at once. right now i have about 2.5 TB and i plan on buying a few more SATA drives this year alone so i hope to be able to have enough room for everything i end up ripping

**edit besides wouldnt it be 1-1.5 TB? 2000*600MB=1200000MB=1.14440918TB OR 2000*800=1600000MB=1.525878906TB
***RE-edit my mistake you meant Tera-bit

OK I want to know what yall think. which is better, DVDXCOPY, DVDFAB or that CLONEDVD? Also, im trying to figure out what dvd burner is the best. i was told there is a plextor that will copy almost any protected dvd's without a problem. Im not really looking to getting a tower just for burning, i just want the best external dvd burner i can get.

DVDFAb(Platinum or HD Decrypter) are up to date. CloneDVD is powerless without AnyDVD. So is DVDxCopy(I think some people use it with AnyDVD?)

As for the Plextor that can copy almost any copy protected DVD, and for that being special- you were told wrong. Any functional DVD drive, being DVD-ROM or DVD Writer will copy almost any copy protected DVDs(except the bad presses) if you use the right software. Is not the DVD drive that does the decryption.

Plextor's aren't the the king of kings any more since the 716 series. The new plextors are now pioneers with nec chipsets.
Now I like Liteons and samsungs (Imgburn can booketype them). Pioneers are also good.

Booktyping, or Bitsetting is a process that renders dvd files more compliant when burned to a blank dvd. In short, booktyping to a DvdRom makes the burn copy more compatible.

You can try DVD-Cloner. The copied disc will remain 100% same to the original with absolutely no quality loss! Perfectly synchronized audio and video. Intelligent Identification Tech -intuitively recognizes the disc's format and automatically provides the appropriate copy modes and options. Chapter selection allows you to only copy the sections you want. Batch copying enables you to define the number of discs you would like to burn. I am not sure this is what you want, but try before use and then you will totally konw.

Sure, will copy with no quality loss. So will Nero, DVD Shrink...if you copy a DVD5 to a DVD5 or a DVD9 to a DVD9. Otherwise, you cannot fit a DVD9 onto a DVD5 without any quality/features loss, can't have a 100% clone.

rebecca11 - DVD Cloner is not a good suggestion, it's subpar pointless software as far as i'm aware, have never read a positive thing about it apart from by people who wish to advertise it. You wouldn't be here to spam us would you ?
