Hi,

I always turn my computer off at the mains overnight. Fairly often it won't start. Sometimes it will power up for a few seconds and then cut out. If I turn off at the mains and retry it might work on the 5th time.
I always get it going eventually and when it's up it runs fine.

Sometimes there is a grinding noise, that I cannot attribute to the fans, hardrives, CD-drives. I am not sure if that is part of the problem as this grinding noise can occur without the machine switching off.

Tech support had said try reseating GPU and/or RAM but I don't think that can be the problem as this happens too often.

Any idea on what is the cause of my turmoil?

Cheers

I only have a 400W power supply. I have 3 internal HDs, a case fan, a big CPU fan, DVD drive and floppy and 2 PCI slots are being used. Could that be too much for my PSU?

Well I assume no one is that interested, judging by the amount of replies, but it seems that the solution is nothing more than plugging my PC directly in to the wall rather than in the extension socket that I was using.

I have had no problems since, although it has only been 3/4 boots. Still I am quite confident as I couldn't turn it on and then it worked first time when I switched the plug straight in to the wall.

This could be a very useful thread to someone in the future (I wish I had found one like it) so I will post back IF that was NOT the solution.

Cheers
