Hey all,
I've had my HP DVD740b since late 2005. After setting it up, I had perfect burn frequency using Verbatim lightscribe and Memorex normal and lightscribe discs (DVD+R). Then after about a year I noticed that one out of every 10 or so discs wouldn't burn for me. Shortly thereafter the Verbatim discs wouldn't work for me at all, but the Memorex still successfully burned.
Now about a year ago I bought two 50 packs of Memorex DVD+R discs. I would be able to get a successful burn once out of 10 or so discs. Well eventually I just gave up trying to burn discs for a while. I started again a few months ago after reformating my computer. The first burned successfully, but then started failing the next five attempts. I think out of the whole 100 discs about 10 to 20 actually burned for me.
Tonight I went out and bought some Sony DVD+R discs cause I remember reading here that Memorex discs are low quality and Sony discs are better. Well the first two attempts with the Sony discs failed. Any ideas why I'm having problems burning? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Here's the log of the last attempt with a Sony disc:

OK I tried your suggestion. One disc burned fine. The next two it got stuck on 1% progress. After 5 minutes I aborted manually for the first one. The second I waited it out and after 25 minutes I aborted manually. Something else I just noticed today is that when I open My Computer to view my drives, it labeled the DVD-RW as "CD drive" after I had aborted the burning process when normally I've noticed it labeled as "DVD-RW". I rebooted an now it's labeling it "DVD-RW" again. Don't know if this is important.
I'm beginning to think it may just be the drive itself. How long do these drives last and what's the chance of it being defective?

just tried again and it failed. could it be a problem with the ISOs created from DVDshrink?

I went to HPs website to check on firmware for your drive...... noticed that on 2006-03-03 was for the firmware that you already have (HJ24) and then I found that on 2006-08-23 there is an update to HI24. Usually the next firmware update would go up in lettering not down....... hj-hi. but since the HI24 came after the HJ24 firmware update I suggest you try to update to HI24, found here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/gener...=reg_R1002_USEN
this may help your drive burn! good luck.

HP writers?
I'm not sure who exactly built the 740b,but the firmware version looks like something made by HP itself. Some burners are like brand named media, outsourcing to other manufacturers and HP is one of them. They had liteon and benq make some of their older drives-which are the better HP drives. But IMHO,ligitimate HP dvd-rw drives aren't exactly great burning drives. They are excellent readers and mediocre lightscribers. They lag in the burning department.
HP is also well known for Lack of firmware updates and Lack of Booktyping capability.
If I had to rely on my HP640c,then I'd be in a world of hurt.
1)25% coaster percentage-burn errors-even with taiyo yuden and hitachi. In my Plextor 716A and Benqs,I avg 1 coaster every 500 or so backups.
2)50% stand alone player compatability rate,so even if they burned ok,then half the stand alone players wouldn't recognize them.
3) No firmware updates in over 3 years since that drive came bundled with my machine.
I've burned tons of Ricohjpn-R03 in the Memorex and Office depot +16x and they are some decent stuff. Very comparable to Sony D21 and D16.
HP a1118x-b/athlon 64-3300+/BenQ 1650 BCDC/LG 8163B/Modded Wii/Epson-R300 and Ty Watershields!!!
