Hi all,

So here is my current setup to backup my DVDs. I use Ripit4me and Decrypt to get the files to my hd, then i was using recode to burn them to dvds. i love it because the dvds come out able to play on my xbox 360 (unlike some other burning programs) and it auto-shrinks the files to fit to the size of the disk. i have been having issues with the program recently and im wondering if anyone knows of a good (and free?) alternative to recode 2? Thanks in advance.

inshadows,

Use the sister software of Nero Recode--DVD Shrink.

What "issues" are you having? If it worked until now, what did you change that is not working anymore?

the only issue that I have noticed with shrink is that it's an extra step because it isn't just a straight burner, right? it actually shrinks it a second time and then can use nero from within to burn? is this correct?

i recently have had problems with recode 2 locking up on me, being unable to backup disks that i copied to my hd. i have actually tried three different movies and have been unable to copy any one of the three, all of which are not newer than 2006. the first two movies recode would just freeze up and the last it would just say burn process failed at about 60%. so far ive lost about 5 dvd disks so im just trying to figure this out without loosing too many more.

what program are you using to rip the DVDs with before you use recode 2 ?

and few things to try:

a clean reinstall of nero or updating it

using better media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim burning at 8x max or below.

and burning on a clean machine (doing a disc cleanup and defragging often) at least once a week

and making sure you have to most up to date firmware for your drive/burner.check here

dvd shrink will autoburn with either nero , dvd decrypter or imgburn (imgburn is my pick of the three)

what were saying is we don't think recode 2 is your problem. we can figure this out

thanks for the advice thus far, i appreciate it.

so i found that i needed to re-install nero which is why it wasn't showing up as an option in shrink. so i did that, and also updated the driver for my burner, which was also not up-to-date. i then deleted all of the 3 dvd files from my computer to start fresh. so i did all this and restarted.

so i used ripit4me and decrypt to get one of the dvds to my computer, and i tried to open with shrink, couldnt, so then i cleaned up the VOBs and then tried. this time it worked, and after encoding, shrink gave me the same error message i had last time. the first window is titled, "dvd-video files reallocation failed" and lists a ton of stuff below it in a text box, mostly my system info, but it's all smashed together and some of the characters are messed up, like it can't find the right font or something.

I hit close to close that box, and the next titles, "backup complete" saying that burning didn't complete successfully but all output files were successfully encoded and are ready for burning using appropriate burning software. total processing time reads as 39 minutes. ug, way too long...

so at this point im thinking the only hangup can be with nero, right? everything else should be good, but using shrink only nero is listed as a burning program, even though i installed imgburn. so where should i go from here? thanks again guys.

i would use dvdfab decrypter to rip fixvts to clean the file then dvd shrink to transcode and imgburn to burn. ripit4me still works but isn't updated so it may be corrupt or just isn't getting the file clean enough for recode to handle properly.

guide

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/494836

The auto-burn function with ImgBurn after using DVD Shrink won't be available unless configured. You can download the particular executable files here.

http://webpages.charter.net/bacitup/Soft...hrink%203.2.exe

or make an ISO file to the HDD and burn manually with imgburn By the way, version 2.4.0.0 is released!

heres my thread with all your backup options also, dvdfab decrypter is the better choice over ripit4me at this point in time

fantastic! i think i make things harder on myself but i can never seem to find a very clear-cut piece of info that has everything i need in one place. but now i know what you use and that it works well, i am a happy camper.

i DID have some success before reading your post. instead of trying to burn with nero in shrink, i went with the iso burn using decrypt. this time it worked, the iso burn was MUCH quicker (about 10 minutes? pretty close to what recode was like), but i think im still going to try what you suggested.

thank you for all the help. if i still have issues ill reply to the thread but i think i should be in good shape. thanks again.

From what you are saying, it seems that the problem wasn't Nero Recode, but instead the way you were ripping/decrypting the DVDs before using Nero Recode. If you liked Recode, just follow the steps in the guides that Zoso linked you to,about how to backup the new releases, and replace DVD Shrink with Nero Recode.

having problems downloading the particular executable files so IMGBurn will work with Shrink. The link you posted didn't work, and I tried checking the guides quickly but didn't see a link anywhere there either. anyone have a quick link to it? Thanks.
