I'm backing up my collection of DVDs. Space isnt an issue so i'm fine to keep the 4-7GB files.
-since space is not an issue should i stick with .vob files or convert to something else?

Converting to something else you will lose quality. If space is not an issue...

.vob files work great in media player classic, but when i try to load subtitles i get this error:
'to load subtitles you have to change the video renderer type and reopen the file'
what does this mean?
i understand the extreme lightness and compatibility plus with mpc but does it handle large files well? or is it prone to unexpected freezes/process ending/choppy video parts or things like that? I'm not trying to bash it, I just want to know if I should spend money on a more reliable program to play my video files.
Open MPC. Go to View->Options->Output. Under Direct Show Video, Choose VMR9(renderless) or VMR7(renderlesss) and you will be able to load subtitles.
Spend money on a DVD Player for your PC?!!..:~) There are too many free players. WMP works flawlessly for me while playing DVDs. VLC is another good player.
