I have experience hdd hanging in the midst of operations, this situation presents itself in a multitude of ways. Firstly, it would hang if i were to use graphics intensive applications adobe photoshop/illustrator, autodesk autocad '08 etc. Secondly using wmp 11 with a combination of msn messanger. Thirdly, using firefox to browse WWW.NBA.COM All of the above would cause the HDD LED indicator to stop blinking, this problem has been a thorn in the flesh for a couple of months, and i have run a series of test ranging of memtest 86 to hdd diagnostics test. Yet all results return normal, i can't lay a finger to it what is exactly wrong. I have changed a new hdd, yet this problem still persists may i know what should i do?
This sounds like a motherboard driver issue. Is this hard drive a sata drive? I've encountered the same problems with sata drives. Sometimes getting the latest motherboard drivers can fix it. Also theres a setting in the bios that can get the drives to run in ide compatibility mode if you still got problems.
If it's an IDE drive, you need to check the jumpers are correct, I once had a similar problem when I had 2 drives set as master on the same cable. I didn't discover the problem until I replaced one of the drives.
I have attached the information collected from PC Wizard 2007 below. Unfortunately, i only have 1 SATA ver. 2 hdd from WD as Master.

With regards to the earlier post, i have also update my bios with the latest updates from Intel. My motherboard is a bit old it is a D865PERL, it did not seem to have a problem initially when i was using IDE HDD. After a couple of years tinkering with it, the computer starts to falter showing freezes in the midst of normal routine operations. Thus after years of accumulating problems, i still cannot address what is truly wrong here.
