Hello everybody. I am new at backing up my DVD's using DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter, and I was wondering if any one of you could answer me this question I have. When ever I make a back up copy of a DVD I have, I notice that I don't have to rip the dvd movie onto my harddrive using DVD Decrypter. Instead I can just use DVD Shrink and do a direct compression of the movie onto the hard drive and skip the ripping part, even though while it's doing that I'm using my DVD drive. Is this going to add wear and tear to my DVD drive and lessen its life, or is it best to first rip the DVD movie and then use DVD Shrink?

no, you cant "wear out" a dvd drive- well in theory you could, but it wont unless you use it constantly over and over and over for hours a day for like 10 years- but you would have another computer by then, so dont worry

Tuskin

uh, yeah DVD+Rs can be played in any player! what are you using? some like 8 year old pice of crap or something?- I have a 5 year old toshiba, a ps2, and a chepo Apex- all of which play DVD+R. ALL MY FRIENDS AND FAMILYS CAN PLAY THEM!- I PRODUCED A FRIGGIN DVD FOR MY FRIENDS BAND (on dvd+r) AND NO ONE IN THE HIGH SCHOOL COMPLAINED THAT IT DID NOT WORK IN THERE PLAYER! THATS PRETTY GOOD CONSIDERING WE SOLD OVER A HUNDRED COPIES!

Thanks for the rant... I can certainly share in your frustrations as I am now just having to enter the DVD burning arena. Our company produces training DVD's and I'm the IT guy assigned to troubleshoot the powerhouse PC built to handle these tasks. I'm learning fast, but I tell you - I pitty the regular Joe Schmo users who unwittingly (sp?) dives into this arena because software vendors have produced a product that "makes it easy". I am going to check out the shrink product -lol- Cheers!

spidey66: I am one of the regular Joe Schmos that dives into this arena big time and because now I have some $1,000 in software most if it is from 321 and their DVD X Copy maker up to the DVD X Copy Gold, and Platinum and most of the time they work good all but on the over 120 minutes types. And what are you saying = our company produces training DVD's= are you asking us to look into your company software and if so put the url to it on here. And more info. I?m one of them that don?t know what exactly do terms like XVCD, Overlay, Dolby Digital, DivX ;-), etc means, its all a lot of bull s--- to me =

pcshateme: Dvd+R CANNOT play in every dvd player. Also talking about downloading movies is against forum rules.

Hey, I want to thank you folks here. I came here to learn to deal with video files, knowing it would be a pain in the rear.

First thing I blundered into was the recommenation to use dvdshrink. What did I find? The link for d/l at this site too. Afterwards I took the plunge to try and use that one program. After one unsuccessful attempt I went back and read some more and the next one after that worked great. Next will be another recommended program and I will work on getting that down.

Point of all this is that a bit of reading saves a lot of bucks out of the wallet. This site is a dream come true to break through the junk that everyone reads on ads trying to sell you something you don't need. People here have experience with this or that program usually and are willing to say what they think from their experience in the learning process. Recommendations should be followed as other folks have been where I am now and that seems to be the purpose for the site...

When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

Dvdxcopy isnt worth the cd it is printed on. If it wasnt for this forum, I would probably still be trying to get dvdsuxcopy to work. I wish there was a way to inform everyone about dvdshrink, then they would not waste their money on dvdsuxcopy

ALL OF YOU: CHILL THE HELL OUT! *Praetor breaks out the tazor and brandishes it menacingly* :P

Now that I have your attention....... a minor conclusion of what we've seen over the last dozen or so posts:

1. DVD burning is not HARD. It is TRICKY and a lot of the guides and things are CONVOLUTED however basic dvd burning is NOT, in nature, hard.

2. As one burns more and more DVDs, you find a lot more little tricks here and there that help you along. Experience is really the biggest teacher with an area like this

3. A lot of beginners think that DVD burning is identical to CD burning. It IS -- however only for Data DVDs and DVD ISOs. Once one starts to do DVD video, all those (mis)conceptions about the simplicity of burning DVDs goesd out the window. Take for instance, just a few years ago when the buzzword was VCD or SVCD. If you 've done a bit of reading beforehand and experimented a bit here and there you have to agree that yes, it is complicated and convoluted and if you dont really know what you are doing then making (S)VCDs is SLOW and the process is AWKWARD but quite DOABLE. As you learn more tricks here and there you quickly find, after just a few successful (S)VCDs that the process is actually quite straightforward. The same applies to DVDs. YES there is a learning curve and YES, many of the guides out there are not very informative and YES, a lot of the more common and user friendly burning applications (i.e., Nero) are quite limited in their functionality.

4. With a forum like this, it is not hard at all (provided you want to learn and are open-minded) how to do all that 'stupid stuff the so-called advanced people are doing' just by asking. The forum is here to share information, not so that we can hoarde it all in one place.

5. True there are people who know what they are doing when it comes to burning dvds and yes a lot of them 'look down' on newbies -- that's ego and one cant really change that. Its unfortunate but you have to realize that there ARE people (and i would love to think the majority) who are willing to share their knowledge and experiences with each other.

6. Tusken you bring up a very good point about not just the process being long and convoluted but also the equipment used (media typers, burners, burning speeds etc) as being a factor to a successful burn. You are wholly correct in that yes, those parameters should not affect whether or not a burn is successgul or not. The fact of the matter is though, it IS -- mostly because the industry is rapidly changing and cycleing through a whole bunch of standards and protocols. DVD burning is still a YOUNG area -- a baby when compared to something such as CD burning (which has been around at the consumer level for nearly 15 years).

7. Tusken, you are wholly incorrect, inflamatory and naiive when you state this however:
Quote:
I you do you must have a huge monitor and instead of a computer chair, a couch. Of course you need a DVD+/- stand alone dvd player if your mormal and watch the movies in the living room on a TV. "OK EVERYONE TO THE PC TO WATCH "LORD OF THE RINGS some of you may need to stand for two and a half hours and strain your eyes a bit! hahahahahaha
- Computer monitors -- even those from the 1990s are sharper than TVs that will come out in the next 3 years (at least those that cost less than $1 million). As a challenge, try to find a TV that has a dotpitch of 0.25 for instance. Not gonna happen (at least with those bidget constraints)
- Computer monitors will easily annihilate the refresh rates and resolutions of TV screens (even the high definition tvs are limited to 1024x768) whereas monitors now adays are approaching 2048x1536. Therefore the computer monitor is sharper andregarding eye strain -- it has a MUCH higher refresh rate in general than TVs do (when was the last time you saw a TV with 105Hz refresh?)
- The only thing that TVs have compared to monitors though is size. Most people will take size over sharpness and low resolution any day (as you seemingly do from your posts). Note however that people are different anf they have diffeerrent requirements and diffferent tastes, opinions and one needs to respect that of other people. I will give you a reason as to why I personally hate TVs regardless of their size (other than the sharpness/refresh issue i already mentioned)...... when you are watching a movie on a computer, you are in control -- you can pause the movie at anytime to grab another beer (this comparison is for theater screens). You can zoom in and check out whatever detail interests you. You can save shots to wallapeper etc and deal with it later. And in the specific case of myself, watching movies on a computer is much more relaxing because I dont have to deal with people yapping, walking around in front of the screen etc. It all comes down to personal preference and you have to learn to tolerate other peoples opinions.

pcshateme: not every standalone can play any type of media (even new ones) so dont be in such a hurry to discount that. (Oh and your question about irc links belongs more on file sharing)

This thread is like trying to telling Bill Gates about working overtime at a minium wage job just to pay the bills. He will never get the it! Why? He is a to self-aburb person like the ones responding with the this is easy "I'm Superior" attitude! Unfortunatly these people never see entire picture and never will! Damn, and people wonder why there is so much violence in the world. I can just imagine meeting some of you in a bar with your irrogance mixed with booze surley you would end up with my middle class work boot stepping on your "superior mind!" LOL Blocking thread so write your hearts out.

- Didnt you know that he did work part time minimum wage?
- Not everyone has an ego problem like you seem to think
- LOL you seem to put everyone down for their "superior mind" but why do almost all parents stress a good education? (dont tell me your parents wanted you to be stupid, that would just be silly).
- Your "middle class boot" ought to have realized that people in bars are typically not in a elementary school playground anymore and doing shit like that proves absolutely nothing.

you should just end this thread because some just don't get it and never will

Well if everything in life was as reliable as a volkswagon, we would all be bored stiff.......

What the hell has happened in this thread......good thread to have a theme tune added to it...Madworld..LOL.....

Everything in life is a challenge.......people accept the challenge or just sit on their backsides and let others do it............and be spoon fed......

You have a choice.....do it or don't.........if you don't, then don't moan about others that do...remember the choice you made!!!!!!!
If you choose to do, then good for you....

This of course is not JUST applicable to dvd's........that is life, period........

...............PIO is no go, DMA all the way...............
Beware of the Pixies - they move in over night and turn your life upside down

Hello everyone!!
This is my first post and I hope I dont ask to stupid a question. I brought my pioneer dvd-106 d dvd last fri and by sunday I had worked out a system that seems to work well for me. I have burnt about 27 dvd's that work well on pc dvd burner and home entertainment dvd player, not missing a beat and good sound quality. It also seem pretty simple. My questions come from reading this thread and it seem Im using the same programs as one poster in here but I am skipping one of the program in his list. Is this going to cause me problems or is it just becuase I have a newer version of a program that elimates the need for that program. this is a cut and post from his post

1) PC with DVD recorder
2) Ripping and compressing software: DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, DVD2One (first two are free, you can get away with just the first one for most films)
3) Burning software: Nero, Record Now Max

Ok the program I'm not using is DVD Shrink. My process is DVD Decrypter into a folder all files. Then I use DVD2One just movie option/or whole movie both seems to work havnt had any problems even with dvd as big as 8 gb or so. Once the process is finished the files in new folder I just burn onto dvd and presto perfect dvd not one crash and burn yet.

Now, am I reading the quote wrong. Just going by DVD Shrink title sounds like it does the same as DVD2One program from its title. So does that mean its one or the other and are the program not in the order that you would use them to produce a dvd ?

Hi tusken

i remember being were you are.

Don't worry, there are some very helpful people around on this site that have now got me up and running.

I use:

DVD shrink, Sony DVD writer and recordnowmax

read a few guides and a bit of experimentation goes a long way.

once you find your way, stick to it.
Alot of the problem is the software configuration e.g Nero, recordnowmax.
get this write and your away.

Best tip i got was to remember that re-authored DVD must be saved in 2 folders

VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS

AUDIO_TS remains empty, everything else in the Video file.

Then burn

But again, configuration is key, most guides can walk you through this

Good luck

I wouldnt worry mate. Tusken was last seen hammering his dvd writer into many small peices, proclaiming "middle class nerdish technology" then feeding it to his Canary as digestion aiding grit. There are also conflicting reports that he needs to buy middle class boots before mounting his, ever so complicated to operate, motorcycle, which he stole off a biker...sorry hell's angel.
