Nero 8 DVD burning issues please help!

I would really appreciate some help.
I am running XP on a Dell Dimension 9150. I moved away from Roxio Sonic that came with this Dell and recently bought Nero 8 Ultra but have been having problems burning DVDs. This problem includes both copying DVDs and burning files to DVD. The hardware check says the recording drive is working. I have uninstalled all Roxio components (I think). I have reinstalled Nero 8 three times with no improvement. I am using TDK DVDs but had similar problems using Verbatim.
What happens when I burn is that the burn process starts, stays at 1% and then stops. The report below is a typical log report that I am getting. Note that the Nero log does not list a Wnaspidll file even though there is one in the Windows System directory as well as in Nero directory. The problem burning is the same whether or not I delete that file in the Windows System directory.

OK...I moved to Sony DVDs and it was a bit better but still failed. The burning process took over an hour, got stuck at 100% but did not finalize. I used Nero Express and the quick copy function (direct from disc to disc).
Can the problem be that I still have elements from Roxio (actually one of the reasons I moved away from Roxio Sonic was that I was starting to have burning issues with it too)? I uninstalled Sonic and used the Roxio zapper (although it seems that zapper is only intended for early versions of Roxio CD copying software).
Also I still see that the log states that "WinAspi: - ". Can this be the issue? I did check and this file is in the Nero program files but does not show up in the log report. I have reinstalled Nero 8 Ultra 3 times.
Need help before I loose my mind! The latest log is below.

Thanks...OK I just tried that but...at 4x (see below) I did not even get to 1%.
See my previous post for my comments about problems.
Help..I am definitely loosing my mind...bought new sofware, new discs, reinstalled Nero multiple times, tried different speeds....

To turn that off, would I remove the checkmark in the "quick copy" box in options? I can't find a function called copy on the fly even though I do see it in the log report.

Rotary:
I ran the aspi_you file and it looks like it sensed the hard drive and 2 disc drives; the screen results flash only for 1/2 second so it's hard to tell but I don't think I saw any error reports.
Gwen / and anybody else who can help:
As you suggested, I tried running the copy to DVD by first burning the image to the hard drive rather than on the fly. The burning of a temporary image to my hard drive seemed to work fine, but then the program did not sense that I had put a blank DVD in the E drive where my burner is. Even though there was a blank disc there already, the drice opened and asked for a disc. I tried putting several new discs into drive E but it still said the the drive is empty even though I waited several minutes. Then I cancelled that action as it was going nowhere. Note that the program was sensing blank discs previously when I was using the direct disc to disc copy function. Here is the latest log.

I will work on turning the DMA back on and will post results in a day. Thanks. The DMA was previously on but I guess the ongoing errors turned them off as I read that that can happen in XP.
Rotary:
I am not using DL discs just regular ones. The source disc for the burn contains about 3500 megs. I did not measure the size of the image. I assume it was temporary and got erased when the burn was halted. I'll keep an eye on that next test.
I used that aspichk.exe file you mentioned and it indicated that the Aspi files that they list are not installed. I know the Ahead ASPI files are there in in the Nero and Windows system folders though. The aspichk.exe indicated that there is an error and ASPI is not properly installed - but that statement is in very faint letters at the bottom of the report table - I assume that statement is valid. I have reinstalled Nero 3 times. Does that Adaptec analysis only apply to the relevant ASPI files or configuration for Roxio or is valid also for Nero? I plan to turn DMA back on as Gwen suggested but I see your point in that it is strange that my logs report nothing under the ASPI section. What should I do next?

aspi layer is for your drives/pc not totally for software, but the software use the drives, so needed by both really...

Hi:
I am still having problems. I followed all previous advise from G and R as follows:
1) DMA is now turned back on.
2) Intalled ASPI layer and now ASPI is properly installed according to aspichk. (however latest log still reads as "ASPI - ") I have highlighted that in red.
Additionally, I did the following:
1) uninstalled and reinstalled the burner though device manager
2) Successfully burned a CD (not a DVD) using Windows Media Player with no problem to double check whether the burner actally works in practice;
3) Reintalled Nero 8 Ultra; note that I have not been installed all components (i.e. these are not installed: Mobile, Home, InCD, Scout, ShowTime; Rescue Disc) but I assume that is not causing the problem.
4) Note that when I open the Nero Burning ROM function, that an error appears and says that I should reinstall Nero. That appeared before and after I reinstalled Nero.
The image to disc are created with no problem or things are OK when I start to burn a data DVD - the problems starts when the burning is supposed to start. The burner drive is blinking trying to sense the disc but the burning hangs at 1% and never really gets started and then the error report kicks in. It seems like the burning process never gets started - i.e. disc is not being sences even though I have tried different brands including SONY.
Here is the latest log. Again I appreciate your help.

The computer is 2 years old. I may have checked for driver updates but I'm not sure. Is that what you mean by firmware? How do I do that?
Also, I'll try uninstalling like I did before through control panel add/revove and then using the removal tool as you suggested.

HI:
So I uninstalled Nero * and used the cleaning tool and then reinstalled. The same problem happened. The image was burned to the hard drive, then a dialogue box says "waiting for disc" and "please insert an empty disc to write to" even though there is a empty disc in the burner. I removed it several times, put it back in, the dive blinks and then stop blinking but the dialogue box does not close. Seems that program is not sensing that the disc is there and to start burning.

OK. So I am still trying to resolve the problems with Nero. So I tried burning MP3 to a CD. Worked perfectly through Windows Media Player. Using same type of disc and files, it failed through Nero. However, it looks like it started to burn and got about 84% done as compared to not even getting started using a DVD (see previous posts).
Here is the log from the failed CD burn attempt. Why would things work OK through Windows media Player but not Nero? Looks like the burner drive works.
Haven't heard back about how to check if my firmware for the burner is up to date. Again, it's only a two year old machine.
Oh by the way, when I turned the DMA divers back on, I noticed that I only have a primary IDE channel (no secondary channel). I read that with some newer machines that is normal. With that primary channel there does appear to be two devices - both using DMA. I assume that's OK.
Should I give up on Nero? I don't see why there are so many problems with basic burning using such recent software on a relatively new machine that I have kept up-to-date.
Again, direction is appreciated.

you have 3 drives yes? 2x roms and 1x HD
so in any case you should see a primary channel and a secondary channel, not heard of only seeing a primary before? but i could be wrong
are any of your drives SATA connection or are they IDE? you may have 2x IDE (primary) 1x sata not sure?

try burning in DAO mode not TAO (a silence remover)

but yeah on windows burning it may be running on spti driver (windows operating system default)
nero runs on or should? winaspi for IDE i think not sure on SATA rom drives...
for checking firmware to drives i use imgburn a free app very good, go to MODE/DRIVES/FIRMWARE update check

First I would make sure that IMAPI services is turned on in Windows Services. If this were my situation I'd go for a fresh install of the OS. A lot of times the more you muck with it the worse it gets.
