Hard Drives and DVD burners are supposed to be set for 'DMA' data transfer.

Assuming that the burner is on the Secondary IDE channel (but repeat for the Primary if required..)

Click My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager.
Expand 'IDE ATA/Atapi Controller'
Right Click on the Secondary IDE Channel > Properties > Advanced settings.
The transfer mode should be 'DMA if available' and the current transfer mode should be some flavour of DMA.
If 'PIO' is the setting, then click 'ok' to go back to the device manager tree.
Right click on 'Secondary IDE Channel' and 'Uninstall', click ok, then reboot.
The drivers will reinstall and a recheck should noe show the setting as DMA.

You may pay attention to your drive max speed and you used disc support max speed! You can use the Nero dvd speed tools find these parameters.
