I bought a Pioneer dvr-106D and it already had the newest official firmware (1.07). Now, as I've been trying to rip movie dvds to make backups, the ripping speed is at first normally somewhere between 5x and 12x. But as the ripping goes on, the speed suddenly drops to 0.5x and stays there for quite a while and then speeds up to 5x and over and stays there for quite a while also. It repeats this cycle a few times till the ripping is done. It takes 18-22 minutes to rip a 4.35gb movie dvd.

I'm a bit confused with these results. I've understood that the ripping speed is limited to 2x with the official firmware but still the ripping speed seems to bounce between 0.5x and 12x. Is this normal or is there something wrong?
I was wondering that if I flashed the drive with the hacked rpc-1 firmware, would it make the ripping speed more stable? Or have I completely misunderstood something? :)

The dvd I was ripping is not scratched and the result is the same whether I use smartripper or nero (copy DVD feature).

If you do a little bit of searching in the DVD Ripping section, you'll find info. on Rip speeds. As you know Most recorders will rip slowly,so it would be wise to invest in a straight DVD-rom to rip with and decrease the wear and tear on your recorder. Be sure that your drives are running in DMA mode in the device manager ,and not in PIO mode or it will cause slower rip speeds and use up to 100% CPU usage. Good luck!
