Ever heard of "DELIVERANCE"? That's one of the most popular older movies. If not, you should go to your nearest local video rental place.

Goddam right! Go get Deliverance. You'll never think of Ned Beatty the same - if you even know who he is.
They just don't make them like they used to, Stryder. Of course there are a few exceptions but most of the decent movies made today are remakes of movies, comics or books made a long time ago. You're cheating yourself out of a lot of outstanding and (gasp!) mentally stimulating movies. You have to either go back in time or look to the fringes to get really good stuff.
As per your question, it seems you stick to the recent "Blockbuster Smash Hit" type of movies of which you'd be hard pressed to find one that's a DVD-5.
Check out "A Clockwork Orange" too.

This would make a much more useful thread if it were turned into a 'recommend a great movie that might have passed others by'
I'll start with Donnie Darko: a simply wonderful movie about time travel and teenage depression (no really)
Run Lola Run (mentioned above) would also make my recommendations list.

You are THE MAN, Malum. Donnie Darko is one of my absolute favorites. Amazing film. Any movie that starts out with a track by Echo & The Bunnymen is alright by me.
Memento was a great one too as well as the original Insomnia starring Stellan Skarsgard. They remade it with Al Pacino (can't remember the title) but it wasn't nearly as good as the original.
La Femme Nikita is an oldie but goodie.
Romper Stomper is a hard hitting flick that was one of Russel Crowe's early ones.
Cube is a total trip.
The Brothers Quay Collection is a must for any twisted stop-motion animation fans.
Man Bites Dog is whacked.
And for any young'uns reading this who haven't seen it:
BLADE RUNNER
Finally, for those with severe morbid curiousity and don't mind being forever changed for the worse try Begotten
