I'm new to this ripping and backing up DVD I started about 2 weeks ago, anyway I read that some people is having problem spliting Lord of the rings, you need smartripper, IFOedit and Nero 5.5.90.
1) Rip all files using Smartripper or Dycrypter..
2)Open the vts_*_1.ifo file in IFOEdit and click VOB Extras
3)check the option "Split to 2 DVD-R's" and point it to the folders that you created on hard drive i.e disc1 and disc2.
4)uncheck strip vob ID's and strip streams (you want the quality intact) and click OK
5)highlight and split it from chapter 1-23 and 24 to the last chapter.
6)Once done burn disc2 to an image(better this way less frizbees.)
7)Now the fun part, disc1 although will play fine in IFOedit it will NOT burn in Nero, you will get an allocation error or something.
8)Open the vts_*_1.ifo on disc1 in IFOedit and click on VOB extras again just run it again saving it to a different folder..
9)once done copy all the files back to disc1 and you can now burn it in Nero, this process will also correct the problem that I have when I play the last chapter it will just paused, this time it will go back to the menu, pretty neat. I hope you guys understand my english and I welcome any comments..p.s. disc2 also contains the menu, you can edit the PGC to start the movie right away(advanced stuff) or leave it as is..

I've been having this problem too. I'm probably being dumb, but what exactly do you mean in Step 8 when you say, "Click on VOB extras again and just run it"? What options should I select?

step 8 open the vts_*_1.ifo in ifoedit, click vob extras, uncheck strip streams and vob id's, then run it to a new directory then copy it back to the original directory where you rip it from..

Thanks for the help Retret. This still isn't working for me. I'm having the same problem with the first disc whenever I split a DVD to 2 discs. When I try to burn it in Nero (5.5.9.0), I get the "Unexpected Exception" error message. Can anyone help?

If you burn disc 1 using Nero as a DVD-ROM UDF/ISO (and untick joliet under the ISO tab + untick any relax restrictions that are ticked)instead of as a DVD video then it burns just fine (I don't refer to LOTR here but any split disc film)

NOTE: you need to create the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders on the DVD unless you have them already on the hard drive

Thanks for the tip Malum. I tried your steps & it worked first time. I've already tried it on another disc and that worked fine too. Is this a bug in Nero 5.5.9.0? Cheers.

I don't know, I got the tip from elsewhere, just passing it on. I guess it's Ifoedit not making the ifo for the first disc the exact way that Nero needs it to burn it as a video.
