Hi Everyone, I copied 2 dvds from a set using DVD shrink.
The first dvd-r is perfect, I toss it in my Pioneer player and the FBI warning etc... starts right up and then soon the root menu appears.

However on the second dvd-r my player doesn't display anything when the disc is inserted. I have to hit "menu" on the remote, and then I can start the movie. On my PC- Power DVD won't even read this second dvd-r at all, it says there is an error.

I've checked to make sure all the .ifo,.vob.,bup files were in fact written to the dvd-r. They were.
When I watch this second dvd-r using Power DVD on my PC (using the eiher the vts_*.ifo or video_ts.ifo files) the FBI warning and intro stuff automantically plays leading to the root menu (same as the first dvdr I made that is OK)

I dont understand why my Pioneer dvd player will not automatically begin playing the intro things and root menu, when the .ifo files I've burned on there clearly show they are on the dvd-r.
I even burned this second dvd-r twice using Nero and ImgTools- same result.

Any ideas?
Thanks!
Glenn

Hi Glenn,
DVD Shrink menus won't work if you use re-author.

Re-authored discs will have the same files as the original if nothing is removed however the menu structure is disturbed. Did you re-author the second disc?
If you make a copy without re-authoring, the files and file structure will be identical to the original, just compressed and decrypted.
I'm not sure exactly how you used Shrink so maybe you could explain in detail?
I'm starting to use Shrink less and Nero Recode 2 with Decrypter more just because of the menu problems I've encountered with Shrink.

Hi Frank, Thanks for writing.
I have never used re-authoring.
I made both dvd-rs the same way, basically I unselected all the audio tracks except 2.0 stereo and let the program figure out how much to compress everything else.

The fact that I made them both the same way is one reason I dont understand why the 2nd disc doesnt autoplay the root menu. But like I said it will *if* I hit "menu" on my Pioneer player remote. On my PC that 2nd dvd-r wont play at all though.

The other weird thing is if I watch the 2nd dvd-r by using Power DVD and loading either of the two .ifo files, then the root menu does appear automatically like it should on the burned copy.

I dont get it.
Ive had good luck with DVD2One, but I like having menus so figured Id try DVD Shrink.
Which despite my problem, is really a fantattic program.
-Glenn

Hi Glenn,
That is weird, Its like somthing has corrupted the file structure. I use Shrink the same way to preserve the menus, I don't reauthor, put the files in a VIDEO_TS folder on the hard drive and then burn it using Nero Burning ROM, DVD-Video mode. Is that the method you use?

I made both dvd-rs that way.
Nero 6.0.0 dropped all the files in the Video_TS folder and burned.
I also burned the trouble disk with ImgTool (same files of course) and it came out the same way.
I think you are right, somehow a pointer or something w/ the menus that tells the player what to play first got corrupted.
Oh well.
Not the first time a weird thing has happenned.
Bet it will never happen again.
Hope you had a great New Years,
Glenn

Hey Glenn,
The last three DVDs I've backed up have been using DVD Decrypter and Nero Recode 2. You may want to give that a try, its a great way to keep the menu. Recode works like an improved version of Shrink with a burning feature. Just rip your movie with Decrypter in file mode into a VIDEO_TS folder and then use Recode to compress and burn. I spent some time here:

looking at the guide. Recode has some great features that are worth looking at.

Just noticed this thread as I am trying to find a clue about my playback problem.

I have used the Shrink and Nero combination for more than a dozen DVDs now (using the same brand DVD+Rs). Most played with no problem on both of my AMW and Panasonic, but there are a few that just won't play on the Panasonic but play on the AMW. There are one or two that won't even play on the AMW but perfectly well on my PC. For the ones that don't play, they won't even get to the root menu. I don't quite know why. If you guys have figured out anything, I would love to hear it.

Hi Peter,
I found this tool to be helpful in getting problems like yours sorted out. You can check your source disc for read errors and your copy. You can do a bunch of other interesting things too, like checking your drive speed. Its free, they ask for a donation though which I think I'm going to do.

http://www.dvdinfopro.com

Run your discs through the program, just put the disc to be tested in your drive and select the icon to the right of the RPM icon.

There's a help menu, lower right, thats pretty good too.

This might clear a few things up for you and help us find whats causing the random playback probs.

Cheers,
Frank

I just ran the DVDInfoPro as you suggested, and those problematic discs are error free!

I have a suspecion that the problem is the new _TS.IFO file; because, it appeared to me that the player just didn't know where to go next. My AMW seemed to have much less of such a problem than the Panasonic playing exactly the same discs.

I manage to play some of the discs by getting through the initial part (previews and so forth) and menu somehow (by fast forward, next chapter, etc). But most of those problematic discs won't play at all. My Panasonic would show "Play" for split of a second and then switch to "Stop" and give me a blank screen (not blue).

On the other hand, all the discs played fine on my PC. Any other thoughts? I wonder if there is a way to see the initial command part that the player sees when starting to play a disc. Does InfoEdit do that?

Hi Peter,

I seem to have found a similar problem. When I apply a lot of compression to a menu using Shrink's Custom Ratio feature, the menu appeared to work but the movie did not play after selecting it. I had to use DVD player's remote to fast forward through the "sticky" spot.
Try a burn with less compression on the menu and see if that helps, Shrink may be allowing to much compression when using custom ratio and affecting the DVD structure. When I did this movie, I used the maximum compression allowed by custom ratio on the menu.

Hi Fasfrank,

The two recent discs that I have trouble with were not compressed at all. They were foreign movies that came within 4.7GB. I can't remember what was the case with the previous few.

Now I am so skeptical that I started using the AnyDVD/DVD2ONE/NERO combo. There are a couple of things that I don't like about the new pathway. One is that it takes longer than Shrink (of course, everyone says the quality is better with DVD2ONE); two that DVD2One interface is not nearly as nice as Shrink's, sometimes I don't even know which one is the main title!

I'd love to figure out the Shrink menu deal as I do like the program otherwise.

If you are dealing with single layer DVD 5 discs try ripping and burning using DVD Decryter. Under Mode-> ISO Read, then pop in a blank, Mode-> ISO Write. Quick and easy.

There is always a chance that the media you are using is not a good match for your burner. An error free result in DVDInfo Pro does not always mean good compatability on standalones.

Try doing a 'Transfer rate' test with Nero CD/DVD Speed an see how your discs look. You want to end up with results like this for maximum compatabilty.

In the following, a result like this will still show as error free, but will choke on some players, while playing on others (the drive had to really slow down to read portions of this burn.

Hi Mystic E,

I did the transfer rate test in Nero and everything appeared fine. I suspect it might just be the Shrink that screwed up the IFO file on those few disks that would not play quite right on my Panasonic. I made a few more disks with DVD2ONE/Nero and they have been fine so far. Maybe I will just have to stick with that.

Two questions for you:
1) How do I switch the transfer rate test in Nero from CLV to CAV?
2) With DVD Decrypter, is there a way to write the files to hard disk at the same time ISO is written to a disk without having to invoke the whole process again?

Thanks.

1. I don't think that's possible. What ever Nero shows is how your drive is operating.

2. I'm a bit confused by your question. With Decrypter if it's a shorty (DVD 5). ISO Read, rips an ISO to your HD. Put in a blank then ISO Write (the ISO is obviously reusable). Don't know what you mean by 'same time'. If you mean rip and create an ISO, no. One thing to remember always rip the whole DVD with Decrypter, you will delete stuff later with whatever shrinker you use. Usually Shrink has no problems ripping, but sometimes Decrypter has to be used.

I assume you are using the latest version of Shrink. One thing to remember is that not all software is 100% perfect. Some apps may choke on a particular disc and/or system configuration. No reason not to use DVD2one, it's a good program.

geocean have you checked to make sure create subdirectories for audio and visual are unchecked? I'm supposing you would have, but you never know, eh?
When that's selected on mine i have to actually choose the ifo file and play it from the menu, so it might be a different problem...

Let us know how it goes.

Where would I uncheck that box? I don't see it in either Nero or Shrink.
