Desktop vs Laptop......

Here's the deal. I had my mind set on buying a laptop as soon as I could come up with the money. I want one that has Windows Media Center and a TV Tuner card so I can connect it all to my Xbox 360. After telling friends and people I know about my plan to buy a laptop, a few have warned me not to. I have heard that laptops, over time, seem to overheat and not function properly just from everyday use? I have been warned to buy a Desktop instead since they are somewhat cheaper and will supposedly last me a lot longer. I would prefer a laptop just because it is portable and easier to bring with me when I am not at home. What do you guys think is the best move to make? I am looking to spend around $1000 max since I am still only 16 and have a minimum wage job it will take me a long time to save the cash lol

I would say that for what you are willing to pay, you will get a better deal on buying a laptop.
Also if you want to be able to move around and take you laptop with you its not to difficult.
Trying to lug a desktop computer around will be difficult. (fun to watch though if you dont have a car. lol)
Computers normally last a bit longer, but personaly i have found that if you look after any equiptment it will last for quite a while.
I payed £400 for my laptop an that was 3 year ago an its still goin strong. (And the stats aint to sad either. its able to keep up with most games out there and does all the word prossessing i need.)
You will probably be looking at paying more money for a complete computer packege than you will on a laptop of near quality.
But this is my oppinion, based on what i have payed out on my computers and laptops in the last 5 years.

Depends what it's going to be used for. If you don't need to take a PC with you, it's cheaper to buy the full size job rather than get a laptop. As far as reliability goes, there are some bad laptops out there, and there are some bad desktops, I wouldn't necessarily say that laptops are worse, although they're more fragile. As for the purpose of the PC, if it's going to be to play games, you're strongly advised to get a full size PC, and preferably built it yourself, or you'll have to pay a fortune (we can help you with that). If it's not a gamer though, you can pretty much buy anything you like.

Nahh, I'm not much of a gamer on the PC, I like me some Xbox lol.
But I do want to use the Media Center functions on my Xbox so I will need a decent video card.

That doesn't require a particularly great graphics card, but it will require one of some degree.

If you need massive amounts of hard disk space I suggest going with a desktop. Laptops internally can only support 320GB (unless you go dual drive which will drain the battery fast.

It's worth mentioning the expense of that too. A 320GB 2.5" drive is worth as much as a 750GB 3.5" (desktop) hard drive...
