I got a evga 780i motherboard, q6600 2.4 Go Stepping Cpu, 2 gb 667 memory, 8800gt 512 factory overclocked to 625, 750 watt power supply.

my problem is that while im watching a movie, show, etc. i get green lines going down on the video and a small box of green lines on the mouse pointer. then the video just shuts off and i have to reboot to get it working again. What can be the cause for this? im tired of having to reboot the system.

video card has latest drivers. i have uninstalled and reinstalled drivers. i've tried underclocking the video card to 600 with same results. i overclocked the cpu to 3.0 not changing the memory what so ever. same thing happens. it happens when everything is set to default. 2.4 cpu and 667 memory. Do i need to contact XFX to replace the card or is it something else? thanks

It's either a faulty graphics card or a dodgy power feed to the graphics card. Which brand is the PSU?

Ultra PSUs, whilst supporting impressive specs, are very poorly made. I suggest you have it replaced as a precautionary measure more than anything else. A lot of the reviews speak highly, but many speak very negatively, and as far as I can see, it isn't bad luck - it's bad build quality.

i dont think its the power supply. this happens only while im watching something. other than that i can play games for hours with nothing happening.

Given that, I would think it's the graphics card, although I'm surprised it doesn't happen with games even if it was. I still stand by the precautionary measure on the Ultra PSU though.

ill take that into consideration. by any chance could it be the memory? cuz after awhile it just shuts off. no sound no video but the computer is still on. like if it fails or something. as far as the video goes. i get green lines. its active for a good 30 secs then everything just freezes and then goes blank.

When video crashes occur, the system often still responds for a short period of time after that point but with no picture - eventually the system cottons on and stops responding itself.
It's odd that the problem is only cause by actual video files, but codecs etc. can't cause crashes that severe. I'd still place it with the graphics card. If it was a memory issue it'd be more likely to happen with games.

XFX will warranty the card for several years - send it back to them.

Do you only get a 30 day retail warranty in the US? In the UK it's 12 months...

says it all really eh?

I'm unfamiliar with warranty legislaton in the US, since I don't live there, but in the UK it's the law for any retailer to offer a 12 month warranty on a product unless it's unreasonable for them to do so (consumable parts for example).
