Sony DRU-510A and 2x TDK DVD-R Media

Can someone confirm something for this newbie (me), please?

Just got a DRU-510A and it does NOT want to burn on a pack of 2x TDK DVD-R disks.

MyDvd lists 4x as the minimum write and says "Invalid Media" if I try to continue.
RecordNow Max won't get past the "please insert media" message (with Speed set to minimum).

SonySupport says that TDK DVD-R should be 4x in their compatibility list.

What is going on here?

Is it that the drive just does not like the 2x TDK DVD-R?
Is it that the drive is INCAPABLE of burning a DVD-R at less than 4x?
Is there anyway to "fool" the drive to accept 2x DVD-R media?
