I have a Core Duo E6850, an Asus P5N32-E SLI MoBo, 4gb of DDR2 800mhz RAM, Geoforce 8800 GTS card and the CPU is liquid cooled.
I'm new at overclocking, so I used the utility from Asus that does it automatically. I managed to overclock it to 3.15 GHZ. Anything beyond that and I get freeze ups and that blue screen! I don't know how to overclock manually. I should be able to overclock to at least 3.4ghz because my CPU is running at 40c. Could someone help me?

it really depends on the chip itself
you could look up the code on the top of the chip at a database
that could give you an idea of what to expect from the chip

Are you using the stock fan? Also, I suggest you read up on it a bit as overclocking can permanently damage your CPU and voids your warantee.

Dont use applications to do it. Go into the bios and raise the FSB that way. It is freezing probably because of the voltage. Up it a little.

I'm using a Nautilus 500 Cpu water cooler. I understand the dangers in OC, but I also know it can be done if done right. That's why I'm asking for help.

What speed are you trying to reach with the overclock?

3.4ghz would be nice. 3.0ghz is the stock speed.

let me give you an example by the code on top of the cpu
my q6600 has the code L737B046 which is known to hit 4ghz
just search your code on google and you should find ppl with the same code cpu and find out their experiences
good luck

3.7ghz is the average overclock. but I can't get past 3.15. I will try to do it manually instead of using auto. I will also adjust the voltage.

That's the batch code, and although mine is different I still hit 4Ghz and benched 3dmark06 with it.

no prob :)

Mine is L73A998 - if anyone cares lol

I have not googled mine, but I heard somewhere that lower batch codes indicate a better chip.

-thanks

I got a question. How big a role does RAM play into overclocking? I have 4gb of DD2 ram. 2gb 800mhz (OCZ), and 2gb 667mhz (Samsung) My MoBO has 4 slots.

remove the 667mhz ram!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
only use the 800 mhz ram and you should see an increase in overclocking

You'te absolutely right. Cheap low speed memory is holding me back. I didn't even know they sold RAM sticks with heatspreaders, or copper tubing. There are so many to choose from. Which brand of PC6400 DDR2 would you recommend for overclocking?

for ram, i would have to go with OCZ or corsair
with OCZ, even if you blow up your ram because you overclocked it too high, they replace it!!!

cosair, i havent had to rma yet but ocz is a well tested brand

get some more ocz ram to replace those samsung sticks

-good luck

I highly recommend a pair of Crucial Ballistix.

Yes, it is stable but I dont keep it like that 24/7 - only for benching. The voltage is 1.6v on the CPU.

Should I go ahead and swap out all 4 sticks of RAM with the Crucial Ballistics? Or do you think the OCZ Gold Ram will work fine with the Ballictics?

Well if they're the same latency and timings they *might* be ok - but I do not know if duel channel will be enabled.

you can also set the timings for the ram manually, lets say two of the ram sticks have timings: 5-5-5-15 and the other two have timings: 4-5-4-15, then set it manually to 5-5-5-15 since the faster ram should run at the slower speed w/o problems

But I wouldn't be taking advantage of the speed of the Crucial Ballistics. I replaced all the RAM with Ballistics. The Cas Lat is 4. Whatever that means.
