Hey all, I bought a new wireless router today a D-link DIR-635 all singing all dancing by the looks on the box, but when it comes down to it it looks like one of simon cowells rejects, i got it all set up all good.

I come to download and it halves my download speed to 1040kb/s (this is the wired connection), it has the latest firmware and i dont even know where to start with all the settings it has :S

Help please!

Thanks for your reply, the problem is with the wired connection and also the wireless it will only give me a maximum of 1040 kb/s. (download speed). Network speed is slow too

Its a wireless N router and apparently can support 300mbps

wireless N router requires wireless N adaptors and exactly the one that router suggests to be used to get the almighty 108 Mega bits per second and/or distance.

If you use any other then by default it reverts to 54 MB/S.

That is the nature of cheap (non-industrial) wireless routers.

choose server (city)
and the speed test will start

my download speed is 1287 kbps and my upload speed is 329 kbps by ethernet cable

my wireless connection is ---> download speed is 1284 + my upload speed 303 kbps

not much difference eh? 54 mb/s is plenty fast system and only video streaming (movies) will allow disappointment.

anytime you mix brands or even hardware not ment for each other from the same manufacturer your system will go to the 54 mb/s default speed

i used a 108 mb/s router with a 108 mb/s pci card once it was worse than using a 54 mb/s router because they were different manufacturers. It took 2 or 3 second to negotiate before the page started to download and when youre using milliseconds to judge traffic thats a long time.

do your cable test with the computer then do your wireless test..if same it's your provider

call your provider and ask them what are the guaranteed speed ranges they gave for your service because even at 54 mb/s should still outrun the internet

I bought this router to replace my old one which didnt cover enough ground wirelessly.

I have a 20mb service which will download at a constant 2.4mb/s, Speed tests are showing my speed at half its capacity.

If i plug the modem direct to the wired PC the speed is fine, if i use my old router and plug that into the wired pc, the speed is again fine.

I have the relavent wireless N adaptor for the wireless link, i need the faster speeds for as you say video streaming.

It seems that the router itself is actually capping my speed both wirelessly and wired.

Thanks

Dan.

is there a hub present?

look at your router page and make sure settings are set at full duplex and no hub is involve cause they can only run at half duplex...and make sure all your ethernet wire is cat5e for full duplex
