I recently uninstalled the software for a NETGEAR SC-101 storage center my desktop and after rebooting one hard drive (E is longer seen in explorer or My Computer. I can see it from a commend prompt. If I go into add hardware XP it comes back and indicates that the drive is fully functional.

In addition it is not seen in disk manager. Do I need to add it again?

The hard drive in question is a Western Digital WD500AAKB-OOKAO 500 Gig. I have looked on the WD site for drivers but could not locate them. Their diagnostic tool does not see it.

Thanks.

Try to reinstall the driver by going to control panel, Add Hardware follow step by step directions. Good luck, Rev

I was thinking along the same lines Rev.

I am unable to locate the driver CD and the WD website does not call out a "driver" download.

I am continuing my search on the web.

Thanks.

Hard drives don't typically need drivers, they should be plug and play. What do netgear have to say about this?

Netgear software was uninstalled and the SC-101 NAS enclosure put in the trash.

The hard drive in question is in my tower and has been working for some time. After uninstalling the Netgear software did this problem show up.

Thank you.

Hmm, that's particularly odd. What shows up in device manager under 'disk drives' ?

So it's not there at all. Hmm. I have to say I'm pretty stumped about this one. Does it show up in the BIOS?

Yep, it does. I keep banging my head against the wall about this one.

I know the hard drive came with a CD-Rom but for the life of me I can't say with any certainty if it had drivers on it or not.

Thank you.

Did the hard drive show up when you first put it in the PC (not in the enclosure) but only disappear when you removed the software or has it never appeared? If the latter you may want to check the jumper on the drive.

It was never in the enclosure. It has always been in the desktop box.
Removing the Netgear software and than trashing the SC-101 appears to the same point in time that this hard drive ceased to be able to be seen.

Hmm, all you can do then I suppose is ask Netgear for the software. If you didn't want the external box though, why didn't you buy a normal internal hard drive?

I was trying to put a reliable NAS drive on my home network. The SC-101 turned out to be junk.

Why would Netgear have drivers for a Western Digital hard drive??

They wouldn't, but they'd post the drivers for their own enclosure. Since removing said drivers stopped the drive from working, it would seem logical to put them back.

I don't think that the two issues are related. I do hope that I am wrong though. I will give it a try and see what happens.

I double checked and can see the drive in BIOS and through the Western Digital hard drive tools on my ultimate boot disk. So, the system sees it but the OS won't acknowledge it.

Thanks.

Could the MBR on this data (non-OS) drive be bad and that is why I am seeing this issue?

Potentially, yes, that's certainly a possibility.

While it was seen in the BIOS and no where else I did something that I wrongly assumed had no impact. I reinstalled the NetGear Storage central software. Amazingly enough, it showed back up. It was never part of the NetGear unit I am at a lose for why this happened.

Thanks for the help guys. :)

I assumed that would help, but I genuinely have no idea why. Oh well!
